Michael Carrick has stepped into the managerial role at Manchester United, with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær expressing his support after missing out on the interim position. Carrick, who was appointed to lead the team until the end of the 2025–26 season, started his tenure with a significant victory over rivals Manchester City, winning 2–0 at Old Trafford last weekend.
This appointment marks a notable shift in the managerial landscape at United, as Carrick, a former midfielder, was chosen over Solskjær, who had been a strong contender for the role after his previous management stint at the club. His primary objective is to guide the team into next season’s Champions League, a tournament both he and Solskjær excelled in as players.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of the upcoming clash against Arsenal, Carrick confirmed that he has been in contact with Solskjær. “Yes, I spoke to him,” Carrick stated. “He’s been fully supportive, as you’d expect. He wished us all the best and was happy with our result against Manchester City.” Their connection runs deep, given Carrick’s prior role on Solskjær’s coaching staff.
Carrick’s first major decision as manager was to reinstate Kobbie Mainoo to the starting lineup for the Manchester derby. The 20-year-old midfielder delivered an impressive performance, effectively disrupting City’s strategy throughout the match. Carrick has opted to continue with the 4-2-3-1 formation previously employed by caretaker manager Darren Fletcher, moving away from the 3-4-2-1 setup that former manager Ruben Amorim had attempted to implement.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with Kobbie,” Carrick noted. “I think I started working with him when he was around 13 or 14 years old. This club needs young players coming through to understand what it means not just for the squad, but for the supporters as well.”
Surprisingly, United not only triumphed over City but also displayed superior tactical organization. Despite holding only 32% possession compared to City’s 68%, United’s disciplined press forced City into numerous errors. A highlight of the match was their successful containment of Erling Haaland, who managed just 14 touches before being substituted after 80 minutes.
Looking ahead, Carrick acknowledges the formidable challenge posed by Arsenal, who currently lead the Premier League and boast an impressive record in the Champions League with seven consecutive wins. “It’s a big challenge,” Carrick said. “They are where they are for a reason, and we’re fully aware of that.”
Victory at the Emirates Stadium would not only bolster United’s standings but also elevate them above rivals Liverpool, who suffered a setback against Bournemouth, conceding a last-minute goal.
As Carrick prepares for this high-stakes encounter, he remains focused on fostering a positive environment for his players, emphasizing the importance of energy and enthusiasm as they aim to continue their successful run.
