Brewers Dominate Cubs 9-3 in NLDS Opener, Face Injury Concerns

The Milwaukee Brewers secured a commanding victory in the opening game of the National League Division Series (NLDS) against the Chicago Cubs, winning 9-3 on October 7, 2023. Milwaukee’s explosive performance featured a six-run first inning that left the Cubs struggling to recover.

The game began with the Brewers showcasing their offensive prowess. They sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, chasing Cubs’ All-Star left-handed pitcher Matt Boyd from the mound after just one inning. Boyd’s outing marked the shortest postseason start for a Cubs pitcher since the 1945 World Series, as he allowed six runs on six hits. The early deficit proved insurmountable for Chicago.

Despite the loss, the Cubs managed to put runs on the board, with Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ, and Michael Busch each hitting solo home runs. However, the lack of runners on base diminished the potential impact of those home runs, leaving the Cubs needing more offensive support.

The most encouraging aspect for the Cubs came from reliever Aaron Civale, who pitched 4.1 innings, limiting further damage and allowing the Cubs to avoid overusing their bullpen. Civale’s performance provided a glimmer of hope amidst the team’s struggles.

Concerns for Brewers After Chourio’s Injury

The Brewers now face concerns regarding rookie sensation Jackson Chourio, who left the game with right hamstring tightness after an impressive performance. Chourio made history by becoming the first player to secure three hits in the first two innings of a postseason game. His contributions included a leadoff double and a two-run single, helping to extend the Brewers’ lead to 9-1.

Chourio’s injury is particularly worrying as he had previously spent a month on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain. Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed concern during the TBS telecast, stating, “It’s scary. He had a hamstring that kept him out a month, and it’s the same hamstring, so we’re worried about it. It’s really unfortunate.”

Chourio’s day ended after he beat out a throw for an RBI single in the second inning but left the field after appearing to move awkwardly while running to first base. Pinch runner Isaac Collins replaced him and remained in the game, but the loss of Chourio would be a significant blow to the Brewers as they continue in the postseason.

Game 2 of the NLDS is scheduled for October 9, 2023, and both teams will be looking to adjust their strategies in light of the first game’s outcome and the potential absence of key players.
