Beloved Ely Resident Robert Maki Remembered for His Legacy

Robert M. “Bob” Maki, a cherished figure in Ely, Minnesota, passed away at his home on October 7, 2025. He was 93 years old. Known for his love of the outdoors and dedication to family, Maki’s life was filled with adventures that left a lasting impact on his community.

Born on October 31, 1931, in Winton, Minnesota, Bob was the son of Lempi (Hill) and Toivo Maki. He was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Ely, where he also confirmed his faith in 1947. After graduating from Ely Memorial High School in 1949, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. His education was briefly interrupted when he was drafted into the Army, serving at Fort Benning, Georgia. Following two years in the southern heat, Maki returned to Minnesota, vowing never to stray far from its northern beauty.

On March 27, 1954, he married Joyce Kokal, and together they built a life in Ely, where they raised their family. Maki had a successful career as a mining engineer, working for companies such as Reserve Mining, LTV Mining, and Cliffs’ mine in Babbitt.

Legacy of the Outdoors and Community Engagement

Maki, affectionately known as “Chick” by friends, was passionate about the outdoors. He spent countless hours hunting, fishing, and landscaping his family cabin on Fall Lake. Over the years, he constructed the cabin using hand tools and a handyman encyclopedia, eventually adding a sauna, beach house, garage, and outdoor grilling pavilion.

His commitment to his community extended to his church, Grace Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer and a council member for many years. Maki also cherished his time with the Wednesday morning men’s group at the HUB, organized by Northwoods Partners. Known as the “Patriarch of the North,” he delighted in sharing stories of his life experiences and adventures with family and friends.

Bob’s insatiable curiosity made him an avid reader, exploring various topics and sharing his knowledge. He often spoke about local history, including the lives of Jack and Tchi-Ki-Wis Linklater and his Aunt Ellen Hanson’s contributions to the history of Winton and Isle Royale.

Bob Maki is survived by his children, Cheryl Anderson (Calvin), Charlene Harkins (Kenny), Robert Maki, and Tracy Maki (John Dybvig). His grandchildren include Andria LaFollette, Liisa Harkins, Siri Harkins, Matthew (Emily) Maki, Samantha (Mark) Buerkle, Evan Dybvig, and Leo Dybvig, along with great-grandchildren Tate and Jack Buerkle. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joyce, and grandson Karl Harkins.

Memorial Service and Community Support

The Maki family extends their gratitude to Essentia Hospice for providing comfort during Bob’s final weeks at home. A memorial service is scheduled for October 20, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, starting at 11:00 AM, followed by a luncheon at 1:00 PM at the Grand Ely Lodge.

In honor of Bob’s memory, donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Northwoods Partners, ensuring his legacy of community support continues. The family has entrusted arrangements to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely. Bob Maki’s spirit and stories will be dearly missed, but his love for life and family will endure in the hearts of those who knew him.
