In a significant trade on March 14, 2024, Austin FC secured winger Jayden Nelson from Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The deal involves $1.25 million in general allocation money, distributed over two years, and Austin’s No. 17 pick in the upcoming 2026 MLS SuperDraft. This acquisition comes shortly after Nelson played a pivotal role in Vancouver’s journey to the MLS Cup earlier this month, where the team ultimately fell to Inter Miami.
Nelson, 23, contributed to Vancouver’s strong season, which saw the Whitecaps finish second in the Western Conference during the regular season and claim runner-up status in the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier this year. His performance last season included three goals and 11 assists across 40 appearances, 21 of which were as a starter.
This trade also signals a potential shift for Austin FC, as reports indicate the club is likely to sell winger Osman Bukari, making Nelson a crucial addition to their attacking options. Having played for three years with Toronto FC and spent time with Rosenborg in Norway’s first division and SSV Ulm in Germany’s second division, Nelson is considered a seasoned player despite his youth.
The terms of the trade stipulate that Austin FC will allocate $700,000 in general allocation money for 2026 and $550,000 for 2027. Additionally, Vancouver retains a sell-on clause, allowing them to receive a percentage of any future transfer fee should Austin FC decide to sell Nelson.
In the same draft, Vancouver utilized the pick acquired from Austin FC to select Zach Ramsey, a midfielder from Washington. Meanwhile, Austin FC bolstered their roster by selecting Stefan Dobrijevic, a forward from Akron, in the second round and Patrick Cayelli, a midfielder from Penn, in the third round.
As the new season approaches, the inclusion of Jayden Nelson reinforces Austin FC’s ambitions and adds a dynamic element to their lineup, potentially enhancing their competitiveness in the league.
