Arsenal is poised to lead the pursuit of midfielder Georgia Stanway following her confirmation that she will depart Bayern Munich when her contract concludes at the end of the season. The England international, who has been a key player for Bayern, can enter into pre-contract negotiations with foreign clubs starting January 1, as she enters the final six months of her current agreement.
The north London club has expressed significant interest in securing Stanway’s services, positioning themselves strongly against competing teams, although no formal contract has been signed as of yet. Since moving to Munich from Manchester City in 2022, Stanway has established herself as a vital asset, contributing to three Bundesliga titles over her 94 appearances.
As Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga by six points and remains unbeaten in 14 league matches, Stanway’s experience could prove invaluable to Arsenal. The club seeks to bolster its midfield, particularly after the departure of Lia Walti to Juventus last summer, which has left the team with an unbalanced midfield setup. Stanway’s ability to perform in a box-to-box role, regain possession, and initiate attacks makes her an ideal candidate to enhance Arsenal’s squad.
Should Stanway join Arsenal, it would mark her return to the Women’s Super League (WSL) after seven successful years with Manchester City. The club would also benefit from her status as a double European Championship winner, adding to a roster that already includes fellow England internationals such as Leah Williamson, Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead, and Alessia Russo.
In January 2023, Stanway faced a major setback when she suffered a ruptured lateral collateral ligament in her right knee, which sidelined her for a significant portion of the season. After enduring 70 to 80 intensive rehabilitation sessions, she returned to form, ultimately playing a crucial role in England’s triumph at the 2025 European Championship.
Arsenal currently sits third in the WSL table, trailing leaders Manchester City by eight points. The club has been active in the transfer market, bringing in defender Smilla Holmberg from Hammarby IF in January. There is expected to be considerable movement within the squad this summer, particularly as several key players, including captain Kim Little, have contracts expiring.
Negotiations with Little and Williamson are reportedly progressing well, while players Mariona Caldentey and Kyra Cooney-Cross have had their contracts extended until 2027. In a further boost, Arsenal recently announced that head coach Renee Slegers has signed an extension that keeps her with the club until 2029. Additionally, former England international Jodie Taylor has been appointed as the new technical director, signaling a commitment to strengthening the club’s strategic direction.
As Arsenal aims to close the gap on the league leaders, the potential addition of Georgia Stanway could be a pivotal move in their quest for success in the upcoming seasons.
