The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their divisional playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night, with key players Ricky Pearsall Jr. and Fred Warner making headlines during practice. Pearsall, who has been recovering from a PCL injury, expressed optimism about his ability to contribute, while Warner, who is on the mend from a serious ankle injury, demonstrated significant progress.
Pearsall, who last reached his peak speed in late September, indicated that he might be ready to return to the field this weekend. The wide receiver has faced challenges since sustaining a PCL strain during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 28, which was later aggravated in the season finale against the Chicago Bears. He has participated in nine out of 18 games this season, missing crucial matches, including the recent victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card round.
“I haven’t run full, full speed since Week 4,” Pearsall admitted. “I have to do everything I can to get back out there and be with the guys.” He participated in warm-ups and ran routes during practice, indicating his determination to return, though he is taking precautions by consulting with doctors and the athletic training staff.
Warner, who is recovering from a broken and dislocated right ankle sustained on October 12, 2023, looked spry during practice. While he may not be ready to play against the Seahawks, his presence has been uplifting for the team. “Being back with the practice jersey and helmet and running around with the guys is great,” Warner remarked, adding that his primary focus is on the upcoming game.
Aside from Pearsall and Warner, several players were limited in their practice, including Yetur Gross-Matos (knee), guard Dominick Puni (ankle), edge rusher Keion White (groin, hamstring), and linebacker Dee Winters (ankle). Safety Ji’Ayir Brown (hamstring) and linebacker Luke Gifford (quad) were the only players not to participate at all.
In Pearsall’s absence, Demarcus Robinson made a significant impact in the wild card game against the Eagles, recording six receptions for 11 yards and a touchdown. His performance highlights the depth of the 49ers’ roster as they prepare for the high-stakes playoff matchup.
Sigle Steps Up for 49ers
Rookie linebacker Marques Sigle has also earned attention as he potentially steps into a starting role against the Seahawks. After being removed from the starting lineup following a close win over the Los Angeles Rams, Sigle has maintained his confidence and continued to contribute on special teams. “In a rookie year, you’re going to have your ups and your downs, but one thing you’ve got to have is your confidence,” Sigle stated, emphasizing his readiness to make plays when called upon.
Sigle’s opportunity arises from injuries to teammates, particularly Ji’Ayir Brown. With Brown still sidelined, Sigle’s performance will be crucial as the 49ers aim to overcome the top-seeded Seahawks.
Wallow’s Strong Performance
Another standout from the wild card victory was linebacker Garret Wallow, who recorded ten tackles. Having joined the team from the Denver practice squad in December, Wallow has quickly made a name for himself. “It was one of those situations where some guys went down and I had to step up and just perform for the guys,” he noted. His contributions have solidified the 49ers’ defensive strategy as they prepare for the Seahawks.
The team’s coaching staff has been proactive in utilizing innovative plays, as seen in the wild card win against Philadelphia. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak introduced a creative play involving wide receiver Skyy Moore, who executed a jet sweep that set up a touchdown pass from Jauan Jennings to Christian McCaffrey. “I just saw it on the call sheet and I was like, ‘this might be good,’” Kubiak reflected on the momentum-shifting play.
As the 49ers gear up for their crucial playoff game, the resolve of players like Pearsall, Warner, and their teammates will be pivotal. The matchup against the Seahawks promises to be a test of resilience and teamwork as they seek to advance in the postseason.
