Richard “Dick” David Waller, a beloved father and accomplished engineer, passed away at the age of 88, just five months after the death of his wife, Marilyn Waller. His family and friends remember him for his deep love, vibrant spirit, and contributions to both his profession and the world of music.
Born on March 28, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Richard faced early challenges when his mother, Mildred, passed away when he was just four years old. He and his younger brother, Ronnie, were raised by their grandparents. The brothers attended St. John Kanty Catholic grade school and Pulaski High School, where Richard discovered his passions for mathematics and music.
Richard’s academic journey led him to the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and later, to Marquette University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1958. To support himself through college, he showcased his musical talent by performing in jazz nightclubs.
A Distinguished Career in Engineering and Music
Richard served in the Wisconsin Air National Guard and began his career at Hughes Aircraft Corporation in the Radar Division shortly after moving to Los Angeles in 1959. His work on significant defense projects paved the way for advancements in technology that are still relevant today. After retiring, he continued to share his expertise through a computer programming consulting business.
In 1960, Richard met his future wife, Marilyn Herrmann, in the same apartment complex. Their love blossomed, culminating in marriage in 1961. Together, they built a life filled with travel, adventure, and family. They welcomed their first child, Susan, in 1966, and later welcomed their son, Steven, in 1971. The family enjoyed exploring various countries, skiing, and cherished trips to Hawaii.
Music remained a significant part of Richard’s life. He played in numerous big band jazz and Latin bands throughout the South Bay, mastering instruments such as the alto and tenor saxophone, clarinet, and flute. His performances at venues like Alpine Village were a testament to his enduring passion for jazz.
