Tomi Lahren, a prominent Fox News personality, has labeled Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as “the perfect poster child for why we need a closed border.” During her co-hosting segment on The Big Weekend Show on October 1, 2023, Lahren reacted to a video of Omar, who became a U.S. citizen in 2000 after emigrating from Somalia, expressing strong opposition to the immigration policies enforced by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In her remarks, Omar criticized the current immigration crackdown, stating, “The one place where we thought we would never experience this is the U.S. Goddamn States.” Her comments were made during a field hearing on immigration in St. Paul, Minnesota, highlighting her concerns over the treatment of immigrants under current policies.
Lahren’s response was assertive, thanking Omar for exemplifying the need for stricter immigration controls. She stated, “She has served as the perfect poster child for why we need a closed border and why we need to stop importing people from third-world countries who have no respect for this country, no respect for our laws and those who enforce them.”
In her critique, Lahren also referenced California Representative Eric Swalwell, who had recently pledged to revoke the driver’s licenses of ICE agents if elected governor. She condemned this stance, describing ICE agents derogatorily and accusing Democrats of prioritizing the rights of undocumented migrants over those enforcing federal immigration laws.
The backlash against Omar’s comments has been significant, particularly among conservative circles. The Rapid Response 47 account on X (formerly Twitter) shared a clip of her remarks, which drew sharp criticism from various Republican figures. Far-right activist Laura Loomer demanded, “Deport this Muslim,” while Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee expressed outrage, prompting tech entrepreneur Elon Musk to suggest Omar should face treason charges.
Former Congressman George Santos, who served with Omar, added to the criticism, claiming, “Her priorities have always been the Somalis in Minnesota; she has no love or allegiance to the United States.” Santos labeled her an “enemy within,” urging Congress and the Department of Justice to take action against her statements.
Omar has faced scrutiny from conservatives for years, particularly after she remarked last June on the actions of ICE in Los Angeles, comparing them to experiences from her childhood in a dictatorship. “To have a democracy, a beacon of hope for the world, to now be turned into one of the worst countries, where the military are in our streets without any regard for people’s constitutional rights, is shocking,” she stated.
Tensions surrounding immigration policies have escalated in Minnesota following the recent killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. This incident has sparked widespread protests against the federal operation, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey calling for the removal of ICE agents from the city.
In response to the ongoing unrest, President Donald Trump announced the deployment of 3,000 ICE agents to Minnesota as part of his immigration enforcement strategy. He threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to restore order amid the rising tensions. Governor Tim Walz has placed the National Guard on standby as the situation develops.
The Department of Justice is investigating Frey and Walz for allegedly obstructing federal law enforcement efforts. Frey described the federal response as an intimidation tactic, stating, “We will not be intimidated by the actions of this federal government,” and referred to his city as being “under siege.”
As the discourse on immigration continues to polarize, the clash between Lahren and Omar underscores the deep divisions in American politics regarding immigration policy and enforcement.
