Nicole Morrone, a legally blind tattoo artist from Poland, Ohio, is redefining artistic boundaries, successfully creating intricate designs on her clients’ skin. Despite being born with nystagmus, a condition that causes uncontrolled eye movement, Morrone has turned her passion for tattooing into a thriving career.
With a vision impairment of 20/400, Morrone can only see clearly a few inches in front of her. “I can legally tattoo, but I cannot legally drive,” she explains. Her fascination with tattooing began in high school, and after pursuing a degree in studio art and exploring various careers, she found her calling in the tattoo industry just two years ago.
From Apprentice to Award-Winning Artist
When Morrone began her journey, she secured an apprenticeship at Trademarked Society Tattoo, where the owner took a chance on her talent. Now, her schedule is booked out for months, showcasing her growing popularity and the demand for her work.
Initially, Morrone felt the need to inform clients about her visual impairment. Over time, however, she has embraced her condition as part of her artistic identity. “Now, it’s just really become part of my brand and just part of who I am,” she stated, reflecting on her journey of self-acceptance.
Morrone’s work has not gone unnoticed; she has received several awards for her colorful and expressive tattoos. “I just love playing with color. I love expressing myself through color,” she said, emphasizing that her condition does not hinder her creativity. “It’s something that I don’t have to look close at to see.”
Community Support and Empowerment
Throughout her career, Morrone has found immense support from family, friends, and clients. “I’ve never had a client not want to get tattooed because of my condition or because of my disability,” she said. This encouragement has empowered her to share her story more widely, leading to a recent video that garnered over 100,000 views.
Reflecting on her journey, Morrone remarked, “I didn’t know until I had a tattoo machine in my hand if I could do it. This is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.” Her story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that passion and determination can overcome significant challenges.
Nicole Morrone continues to push the boundaries of art, proving that creativity knows no limits, regardless of physical circumstances. Her journey is not just about tattoos; it’s about resilience, self-acceptance, and the power of community support.
