The CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS) girls soccer playoffs saw an exciting round of matches on Saturday, with several teams securing their places in the upcoming quarterfinals. Notably, the Open Division featured a dramatic second leg of a two-game series, while other divisions also showcased impressive performances.
Open Division Highlights
In the Open Division, Santa Margarita triumphed over Corona Santiago with a score of 2-1, advancing to the next stage of the playoffs. Mater Dei dominated Huntington Beach with a convincing 5-0 victory, also securing their spot in the quarterfinals. The match between JSerra and Redondo Union ended in a 0-0 draw, allowing JSerra to advance based on the aggregate score.
Division Roundup and Upcoming Matches
In Division 1, several teams put on strong performances. Westlake edged out El Dorado with a narrow 2-1 victory, while Rosary claimed a 2-0 win against Great Oak. Orange Lutheran secured a substantial 4-0 win over San Juan Hills, and Newport Harbor managed a close 1-0 victory against Moorpark. The quarterfinal matches set for Wednesday, March 15, 2024, will feature Rosary facing Westlake and Orange Lutheran going up against Newport Harbor.
Division 2 also saw thrilling action, with Ayala overpowering Beckman with a score of 4-0 and Portola narrowly defeating Crean Lutheran 1-0. A tied match between Warren and La Habra (1-1) ended with Warren advancing through penalty kicks. This division will see Portola take on San Marino in the quarterfinals.
In Division 3, La Salle secured a tight 1-0 win over Fullerton, while Quartz Hill edged past Sage Hill with a score of 3-2. La Canada also advanced after a penalty shootout against Costa Mesa, following a 2-2 draw.
Division 4 featured San Jacinto defeating Katella 2-0, and Laguna Hills beating Tahquitz 1-0. In Division 5, Anaheim and Kennedy both secured victories, with Kennedy winning 1-0 against Santa Paula.
Other divisions such as Division 6 and Division 7 also saw their share of close matches, with Ocean View defeating Desert Hot Springs 3-2 and Santa Rosa Academy winning against Saddleback 1-0.
