David Wesley Angel, a cherished husband and father, passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on October 2, 1939, in Hinton, Oklahoma, he was the son of Bessie and Jessie Porter. David’s journey through life was marked by adventure, love, and a deep appreciation for family and nature.
David’s early years were spent in Chula Vista, California, where he formed lifelong friendships while attending school. His adventurous spirit led him to join the U.S. Air Force, where he completed training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. His first assignment took him to Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where a chance encounter at a surprise birthday party introduced him to Lorraine, his future wife. This unexpected moment ignited a love story that spanned over 63 years, resulting in a family that included children and grandchildren.
Settling in San Diego, California, David and Lorraine raised three children: Kristen, Kelly, and Jon David. He dedicated much of his professional life to the Department of Defense at the Coronado Naval Base. Seeking more time for his family and outdoor pursuits, David retired in his 40s. In 1992, the couple relocated to Magalia, California, aiming for a rural lifestyle, though their children eventually followed them to Northern California.
Despite his relocation, David remained an avid supporter of the San Diego Padres and Chargers, demonstrating his enduring ties to his roots. Those who knew him described David as a quiet and introspective man, whose calm presence left a lasting impression. He had a remarkable curiosity for the natural world, particularly reptiles and insects. Notably, he and Lorraine successfully hatched two King Snakes, one of which lived for over 20 years.
David’s love for the outdoors was evident in his active participation in various activities. He volunteered with the Eagle Scouts and embarked on a memorable ten-day backpacking trip to climb Mt. Whitney, California’s highest peak. One of his fondest memories from this adventure was catching three trout, which he prepared for himself and two companions.
An enthusiastic jogger and cyclist, David completed several 5 km runs and even a half marathon. He and Lorraine enjoyed long bike rides every Sunday, covering distances of 30 to 50 miles, often accompanied by their children. However, the family did not join them on a challenging 130-mile bike ride in Baja California.
David’s passion for woodworking turned him into a skilled craftsman. His meticulous nature and creativity resulted in beautiful furniture and treasured pieces for family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather John, siblings Mary, Alice, Lila, Johnny, and grandson David. David is survived by his wife, Lorraine; daughters Kristen (wife Mariam) and Kelly (husband David); son Jon David; grandsons Zach (wife Ariel), Garrett, and Noah; great-grandsons Anthony David and Kyler; great-granddaughter Kaylynn; along with many nieces and nephews.
David Wesley Angel’s legacy is one of love, adventure, and cherished memories. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to PBS or Audubon in his memory, ensuring that his spirit of curiosity and respect for nature continues to inspire others.
