Totten Intermediate School Dominates SIMS League with Four Championships

Totten Intermediate School achieved remarkable success during the fall season in the Staten Island Middle School (SIMS) League, securing championships in both varsity and junior varsity categories for girls’ flag football and boys’ soccer. The school’s athletic teams, known as the Eagles, showcased exceptional talent and teamwork, culminating in a series of victories that have drawn praise from the community.

Principal John Boyle expressed his pride in the student athletes, stating, “These Eagles truly soared both in the classroom and on the field! There is something very special about representing and competing for your school. Our Eagles play for the name on the front of their jersey, not the name on the back.” He extended gratitude to the coaching staff, highlighting their role in fostering a love for the game among the players.

Flag Football Teams Excel

The Eagles’ junior varsity Blue and varsity flag football teams, under the guidance of coaches Tommy DeAngelis and Gianna D’Acunto, both finished their seasons with a perfect record of 8-0. Their championship victories on November 6, 2023, at Susan Wagner High School featured impressive performances. The junior varsity team captured their second consecutive title with a dominant 38-7 win against IS 7.

In this championship game, Demi Durante earned the MVP title with three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Quarterback Gianna Logosso threw four touchdown passes, with key receptions from players including Frankie Ortiz and Addison Klein. The roster included standout athletes like Valentina Garcia and Taylor Anderson, who excelled in both offensive and defensive roles.

The varsity girls’ team continued their tradition of excellence by achieving a four-peat. Quarterback Ema Herbst delivered an MVP performance in the championship game, throwing three touchdowns and rushing for another in a thrilling 52-48 win over IS 75. Key contributions came from players Alicia Albano, Gabby Gerardi, and defensive stalwarts like Giovanna Caminiti and Madison Sutera, who helped secure the title.

Boys’ Soccer Teams Shine

In soccer, the boys’ teams, coached by Gary Tames and Scott Griffin, faced varied challenges but ultimately succeeded in clinching the championship. The junior varsity Blue squad had a balanced regular season with a 2-2-2 record. Their determination shone through in the championship match, where they triumphed 3-2 over Marsh. Goals were scored by Gian Cappelini, Sebastian D’Orazio, who netted an incredible long-range goal, and Marcc Norato, who secured the winning goal.

The varsity boys’ team ended their regular season with a 4-2 record and displayed resilience in the playoffs. Their journey culminated in a tense championship match at Tottenville High School on November 12, 2023. The game concluded in a stalemate at 0-0 after regular time, leading to penalty kicks where the Eagles triumphed 5-4 over IS 72. Key players Thomas Verga, Noah Dzemovski, Piero Botero, and Keidan Kogan converted their penalties, with Kogan scoring the decisive goal. Goalkeeper Kirill Finkelshtein made nine saves during regulation and two critical saves during the penalty shootout, securing the championship for Totten.

The achievements of Totten Intermediate School’s teams highlight the dedication and talent of its student athletes. Their victories not only reflect their hard work on the field but also foster a strong sense of community pride.
