The St. Paul Public Library has introduced a special edition library card to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Southeast Asian resettlement in the city. Created by Twin Cities artist Kao Lee Thao, the card features vibrant artwork depicting a young Hmong woman in traditional attire engrossed in a book, surrounded by villagers traversing a lush forest.
The design reflects a blend of traditional textiles, patterns, and landscapes that symbolize resilience and connection. In a statement, the library noted that “flowing water ties the design together, representing the journey from the Mekong to the Mississippi — symbolizing survival, transformation, and imagination.” This initiative aims to honor the rich tapestry of the Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, and Vietnamese communities that have established their roots in St. Paul.
Availability and Community Engagement
The card is free and available to residents of St. Paul at all library locations, while supplies last. It serves not only as a functional item but also as a celebration of the contributions made by Southeast Asian communities to the cultural landscape of the city.
To further celebrate this significant milestone, the library will host the “Stories of Abundance” storytelling event on December 13, 2023, from 14:00 to 16:00 at the Sun Ray Library, located at 2105 Wilson Ave. This event, organized in collaboration with the SEAD Project, a Minneapolis-based community organization, aims to raise awareness of the Southeast Asian diaspora and highlight their stories.
Looking Ahead
The St. Paul Public Library’s efforts to honor the past while engaging the community set the stage for a celebration of diversity and cultural heritage. As the library system continues to serve as a vital resource for the community, it invites residents to participate in recognizing the impact of Southeast Asian communities over the past five decades.
