A coalition of nonprofits and businesses in northwest Ohio is working together to provide winter coats for children in need. The initiative, known as Coats for Kids, aims to ensure that every child in the region has access to warm outerwear during the colder months.
Sydney Williams-Birch, a local advocate, shared a personal story that sparked her dedication to this cause. Reflecting on a childhood memory of struggling to stay warm, she expressed her commitment to helping other children avoid similar hardships. “No child should have to suffer from the cold,” Williams-Birch stated during a recent community meeting.
The Coats for Kids initiative, launched in early December 2023, has already garnered significant support from various local businesses and organizations, including the United Way of Greater Toledo. This collaboration has mobilized resources to collect, purchase, and distribute coats to children throughout the area, with an emphasis on reaching underserved communities.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. According to the United Way, more than 1,000 coats have been collected so far, with a goal of reaching 2,500 coats by the end of the month.
