Interior Designer Shea McGee Shares Essential Bedroom Tips

Creating a beautifully designed bedroom can often feel overwhelming, as it requires balancing style, comfort, and personal preferences. Interior designer Shea McGee has provided valuable insights to help individuals navigate this process, offering three essential tips for designing a sleep space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. These guidelines are particularly useful for those starting from scratch or looking to refresh their current bedroom.

Start with the Right Bed

According to McGee, the foundation of a well-designed bedroom starts with the bed. She emphasizes the importance of selecting a bed that aligns with personal needs and preferences. “When I’m putting together a bedroom look, I typically always start with the bed selection first,” she states. Understanding whether one prefers a cushioned headboard or the dramatic flair of a canopy bed can influence the overall design.

McGee advises potential decorators to assess their own tastes: “You’ve got to get to know yourself and what you love.” Factors like the style of the headboard, whether it is tufted or smooth, can significantly impact the room’s ambiance. Additionally, she notes that height is crucial in a well-balanced design, particularly when windows are involved. A tall headboard can create a focal point that harmonizes with surrounding architectural features.

Mix and Match Furniture Styles

Moving beyond the bed, McGee encourages mixing and matching larger furniture pieces. Rather than opting for a matching set, incorporating contrasting designs creates a more curated look. She explains, “Once I have chosen my bed, I look at nightstands and dressers. I like to look for some point of connection between the two pieces but differentiate the leg details.”

For example, McGee uses her Dana Nightstand, made from oak with a black finish, alongside a dresser crafted from burlwood. This thoughtful contrast lends an air of sophistication while maintaining a cohesive theme. The goal is to create a space that feels unique without sacrificing balance.

Layering Bedding for Comfort

Bedding is another critical aspect of bedroom design, according to McGee, who believes it is the most transformative element in the space. Bedding not only contributes to the room’s overall aesthetic but can also be adjusted with the changing seasons. “The most transformative decor in your bedroom is your bedding,” she explains.

McGee recommends employing a “four-layer” approach to bedding, which includes sheets, a coverlet or quilt, a duvet, and a decorative throw. This method ensures both comfort and style. For instance, a chunky throw can be swapped for a lighter linen blanket during warmer months, allowing for a dynamic and inviting environment.

To further assist with bedroom design, McGee suggests specific products, such as the Mercer Plaid Duvet Cover, which can enhance the room’s visual appeal. Pairing it with vibrant pillows can create a balanced and inviting look.

Every tip provided by McGee emphasizes the importance of personal style and comfort. By breaking down the design process into manageable elements, she equips individuals with the tools to create their dream bedrooms.
