Several nonprofits in the Hartford area have successfully garnered significant funding to enhance their missions. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving recently initiated a “social enterprise accelerator” program in collaboration with No Margin, No Mission, a consulting firm focused on supporting nonprofit organizations. This initiative aims to boost both the impact and entrepreneurial capacity of participating nonprofits.
In a matching challenge announced in June, the foundation pledged to match 100% of every dollar raised by four selected nonprofits, up to $30,000 for each organization. By the deadline, these nonprofits collectively raised sufficient funds to qualify for over $101,000 in matching grants. The challenge officially concluded in October, marking a significant achievement for the participating organizations.
Impact of the Matching Challenge
Each of the four nonprofits held a “fast pitch” session, where they presented their business plans to potential donors, directly requesting financial support for their startup capital needs. The organizations involved include Charter Oak Cultural Center, Ebony Horsewomen, Journey Home, and Our Piece of the Pie.
Charter Oak Cultural Center raised $71,000, which included $30,000 in matching funds from the Hartford Foundation. This funding will support the rental of its various spaces, including the sanctuary and galleries, and will be complemented by arts and cultural programs, workshops, and community engagement activities.
Ebony Horsewomen secured $23,000, with $11,531 coming from matching funds. This funding will enhance events at the Black Boots Venue Rentals located at the Mary Fields Museum, adding activities such as horseback riding and hayrides.
Journey Home raised an impressive $114,000, which includes the maximum $30,000 in matching funds. This initiative will support the operation of a thrift store named Home for Good, offering gently-used household items and furniture at reduced prices.
Lastly, Our Piece of the Pie raised $63,500, which also included $30,000 in matching funds. The organization focuses on providing comprehensive training and development programs for social service professionals, aiming to better serve local youth.
Community Commitment and Future Endeavors
The response from local nonprofits to the accelerator program has exceeded expectations, according to Meher Shulman, associate director of the Hartford Foundation’s Nonprofit Support Program. Shulman expressed admiration for the creativity and commitment demonstrated by these organizations in developing viable business plans to secure new revenue sources.
“The enthusiasm and effort that area nonprofit organizations have brought to the ‘Social Enterprise Accelerator’ program has exceeded our expectations,” Shulman stated. “We are proud to help them meet that need.”
This funding initiative not only boosts the financial health of these nonprofits but also underscores the growing appetite for social enterprise in the Greater Hartford area. By fostering innovative solutions and support systems, the Hartford Foundation aims to propel these organizations toward sustainable growth and greater community impact.
