The City of Detroit has joined forces with AT&T and Human I-T to distribute 100 free refurbished laptops to seniors in Wayne County. This initiative aims to address the significant digital divide impacting thousands of older adults in the region. The laptop giveaway took place on November 7, 2023, and included essential digital literacy training to empower recipients to navigate the online environment with greater confidence.
Leola Johnson, one of the new laptop recipients, expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am very, very, very happy I came in today.” For many seniors, digital access is no longer a luxury but a necessity for daily activities. Calesther Arnold, another recipient, noted, “Everything is digital and everything is on the internet now, so you have to have it.”
The collaboration between AT&T and Human I-T highlights a growing concern over internet access among older Americans. John Emra, president of the AT&T Atlantic Region, remarked, “The reality is there are too many Americans who don’t have access to the internet, and the reality today is if you don’t have access to the internet, you really can’t do anything.”
Combating the Digital Divide
Wayne County Executive Warren Evans acknowledged the unique challenges that technology poses for older generations. He stated, “People of my generation and a little before we didn’t grow up around technology; we’re not hardwired for technology, but technology is the future. It’s today.”
Beyond simply providing laptops, the program offers comprehensive digital literacy training. This training is designed to help seniors not only build essential skills but also gain the confidence needed to use technology independently. Johnson emphasized her desire to learn, saying, “I want to learn how to do it all by myself so I know what I am doing.”
The training sessions also cover crucial safety topics, including how to identify and avoid online scams. Johnson found the information particularly valuable, stating, “It has helped me, and if they have another one to come and learn, then I’d be willing to come because I learned a lot about the scammers today because I always get fooled by them.”
For recipients like Charlie Thornton Jr., the new laptop represents a significant opportunity. He described the giveaway as “a great blessing to me.” Arnold echoed this sentiment, explaining how the technology will assist her in her daily life: “It’s going to be quite helpful, it’s quite helpful to have.”
This initiative not only provides vital resources but also fosters a sense of community and connection among seniors, helping them thrive in an increasingly digital world. As technology continues to evolve, programs like this play a critical role in ensuring that no one is left behind.
