The final segment of this year’s Good Day Gardening featured a conversation with Jeff Turnbull, owner of Darby Creek Nursery. As cool temperatures settle over Central Ohio, Turnbull highlighted the unique opportunity presented by the current mild climate, which has yet to see a hard freeze.
Despite the lateness of the gardening season, this period remains optimal for planting. Darby Creek Nursery is currently offering discounts of 25 to 50 percent on most plants and will continue to operate seven days a week until Christmas. After the holiday, the nursery will shift to a weekday schedule until the first weekend of March.
In the segment, Turnbull shared valuable late-season gardening advice. He suggested that gardeners can lightly prune roses now, with heavier pruning best reserved until after a few hard freezes or later in winter. While the season for grass seeding is winding down, Turnbull noted that laying sod is still a viable option. The cooler temperatures mean that watering requirements are reduced, allowing for less frequent maintenance.
Looking ahead, Darby Creek Nursery is already planning for upcoming landscape projects in early 2024. Turnbull encourages anyone with questions or plans for their yards to visit the nursery for expert guidance. This segment marked the conclusion of the ninth year of Good Day Gardening on FOX28, and Turnbull expressed gratitude to the audience for their support throughout the season.
As the gardening year wraps up, the team at Darby Creek Nursery looks forward to reconnecting with gardeners in the spring of 2024, ready to share more insights and tips.
