The Contra Costa County Library has selected “James” by Percival Everett as the featured book for this year’s Read Contra Costa program. The initiative, which encourages residents to read the same book and share their reflections, runs from September 2 to November 8, 2023.
“James” is a notable retelling of Mark Twain’s classic “Huckleberry Finn,” offering an insightful perspective through the character Jim. This Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning novel has garnered significant acclaim, making it a fitting choice for the community reading program.
Residents can access “James” in various formats, including hardback, e-book, and e-audiobook. The library’s website, ccclib.org, serves as a hub for upcoming events and information about local book clubs, fostering a vibrant reading community. This year, the library is proud to partner with Los Medanos College and the Richmond Public Library to enhance the program’s outreach.
In conjunction with the reading program, September marks Library Card Sign-Up Month. The Contra Costa libraries invite new members to obtain library cards, which unlock free access to e-books, e-audiobooks, streaming films, online tutoring, and a plethora of digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines. Such resources are invaluable, especially as the new school year commences, providing students with essential tools for learning and growth.
Additionally, the library system celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of events that honor the contributions of the Latinx community. Noteworthy among these is a multipart celebration at the Pittsburg Library. This includes “Quinceañera Memories: Stories from Our Community,” showcasing personal reflections and photographs from local women about their quinceañera experiences.
Teens are invited to participate in “My Quinceañera Moment,” a fashion show scheduled for September 13, featuring cultural celebrations accompanied by a mariachi performance. These events not only highlight significant traditions but also foster community engagement.
Library patrons can also enjoy the Big Movie Watch on Kanopy, a streaming service offering thousands of independent, classic, international, and documentary films. From September 19-28, users can stream “The Love Punch” without the usual ticket requirement, making it an excellent opportunity for movie lovers.
The Contra Costa County Library has recently introduced PebbleGo Science, a digital resource tailored for K-2 students. This platform incorporates narrated text, animated highlights, and educational games to engage young learners in subjects ranging from mathematics to earth sciences.

The library’s calendar is filled with engaging events, including a Fiction Writing Workshop on September 9 at the Martinez Library, designed for writers at all levels to overcome creative blocks. Additionally, a webinar on September 23 will teach patrons how to navigate Consumer Reports, providing valuable insights into product reviews.
For those looking for something more active, the Kensington Library will host a fencing demonstration on September 25, while the Oakley Library offers a performance by Ballet Folklórico on September 30, showcasing traditional Mexican dance.
With a rich array of programs and resources, the Contra Costa County Library continues to serve as a vital community hub, promoting literacy, culture, and lifelong learning.
