Community Mourns the Loss of Russell D. Pettijohn, 96

Russell D. Pettijohn, a beloved member of the St. Joseph community, passed away on September 26, 2025, at the age of 96. His death marks the end of a long and fulfilling life dedicated to family, service, and community engagement. Born on December 1, 1928, in Grant City, Missouri, Russell was the son of Orten and Bertha (Dick) Pettijohn.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff Pettijohn and Brad Pettijohn, as well as seven grandchildren, including Lori O’Neal and Jason Pettijohn, and nine great-grandchildren. Russell was also the brother of Joan Elford and Donald Pettijohn. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Glee Pettijohn, along with his parents and several siblings.

Life and Legacy

Russell grew up in St. Joseph, where he graduated from Lafayette High School in 1946. He proudly served in the Missouri Air National Guard and the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of sergeant. His professional life included a 30-year tenure at the St. Joseph News-Press as a printer and in various roles. He later worked for the St. Joseph School District Maintenance Department for seven and a half years.

In addition to his career, Russell was deeply involved in community activities. He and Glee were charter members of the Savannah Sashayers Square Dance Club, enjoying dancing together for over 40 years. He was also a dedicated member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, where he actively participated in church activities.

Russell’s hobbies included fishing, camping, gardening, and taking care of his yard. He and Glee enjoyed spending their winters in warmer climates, traveling to Texas, Arizona, and Florida as “snowbirds.”

Farewell Services and Contributions

The Pettijohn family will hold farewell services at 10 a.m. on October 4, 2025, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with interment at Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather from 5 to 7 p.m. on October 3 at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Missouri Right to Life or Mosaic Life Care Hospice. An online guest book and obituary are available at www.meierhoffer.com.

Russell D. Pettijohn will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, community, and service, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment that will resonate with those who knew him.
