A bus driver from Newark has received recognition for his significant efforts in promoting mental health awareness among his colleagues and the wider community. Leigh Barker, an employee of Stagecoach East Midlands, has been named the “Star of the Month” for his dedication to raising awareness about mental health issues, particularly through his involvement with the charity Andy’s Man Club.
Barker was awarded a commendation certificate along with a £100 Love2Shop voucher as part of this recognition. His initiatives include advocating for the charity’s message, which emphasizes that it is #ITSOKAYTOTALK. Nominations from colleagues highlighted his persistent efforts to keep mental health at the forefront of discussions within the workplace and beyond.
One colleague stated, “I would like to nominate Leigh for his ongoing work in raising awareness of mental health for his colleagues, keeping it at the front of everyone’s minds.” Another nomination praised, “He has done absolutely outstanding work promoting men’s mental health through his work with Andy’s Man Club. Well done, Leigh.”
Promoting Positive Mental Health
In early 2025, Stagecoach East Midlands took a significant step by wrapping two of its buses in Andy’s Man Club branding. The charity offers free peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online, aiming to eliminate the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and facilitate conversations that can help those in need.
Matt Cranwell, managing director of Stagecoach East Midlands, expressed pride in Barker’s contributions. He noted, “I am very proud of the work that Leigh has done. I know that he has pushed the subject of mental health extremely hard and that his passion has encouraged others to get involved or seek assistance.”
Cranwell emphasized the broader impact of Barker’s work, stating, “Leigh’s actions also led to the partnership Stagecoach now has with Andy’s Man Club—a partnership that other Stagecoach operating companies are also wanting to get involved with.” This collaboration aligns with the company’s core values of community support and unity.
A Lasting Impact on the Community
The commendation for Barker reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in the workplace. His efforts have resonated not just within Stagecoach, but also in the communities served by the bus operator. By bringing attention to mental health issues, Barker has fostered an environment where open dialogue is encouraged and support is readily available.
The initiative aligns with a larger movement to address mental health challenges faced by men, particularly in the context of societal expectations and stigma. By advocating for the Andy’s Man Club message, Barker is helping to create a culture where mental health is prioritized and conversations are normalized.
As the conversation around mental health continues to evolve, the recognition of individuals like Leigh Barker highlights the essential role that community leaders play in fostering awareness and support. His commitment serves as an inspiring example for others in the industry and beyond, proving that even small actions can lead to significant change.
