Brian Hartline Takes Helm as USF Head Coach, Eyes Championship

Brian Hartline has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the University of South Florida (USF), marking a significant step in his coaching career. Hartline, who currently serves as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Ohio State University, expressed his excitement for this role, describing it as a “world-class opportunity.” This announcement follows Ohio State’s recent loss in the Big Ten Championship Game, after which Hartline traveled to Tampa to meet with his new team and participate in an introductory press conference.

Hartline has strong ties to Florida, having spent a significant portion of his National Football League (NFL) career with the Miami Dolphins. He stated that South Florida was always a prime consideration for his first head coaching position. “I have always felt like Florida was my second home,” Hartline remarked. “When assessing opportunities, USF was always toward the top of the list.”

Despite interest from other programs, including Penn State and Kentucky, Hartline prioritized a return to Florida. He emphasized the importance of recruiting local talent, noting that all of Ohio State’s starting wide receivers this season hail from Florida. “I cannot wait to bring the best players to USF,” he said, highlighting his commitment to developing a strong recruiting pipeline in the region.

Taking on the head coaching role at USF comes with its challenges. Hartline acknowledged the difficulty of balancing his responsibilities at Ohio State while transitioning to his new position. He reflected on the emotional weight of the decision, particularly for his family, which includes three young children. “We had to be at the right spot for us to leave,” he explained, underscoring the significance of family considerations in his career move.

During his introductory press conference, Hartline expressed gratitude to key figures at Ohio State, including head coach Ryan Day and former coach Urban Meyer, for their guidance and support throughout his journey. He shared his vision for USF, which echoes the principles he learned at Ohio State. “We will create and sustain a real family atmosphere,” he said, emphasizing the importance of a positive environment for players.

Hartline’s ambitions for USF are clear. He aims to instill a “championship mentality” within the program and is eager to engage with the USF community and fan base. “Our goal will be to make you proud. We will win at the highest level,” he stated confidently.

Before fully committing to his role at USF, Hartline will continue to fulfill his duties at Ohio State, particularly as the Buckeyes prepare for their upcoming appearance in the College Football Playoff. Day has expressed confidence in Hartline’s ability to manage both roles effectively. “He is going to be locked in,” Day said, affirming Hartline’s dedication to finishing the season strong at Ohio State.

As Hartline embarks on his new journey at USF, he carries with him lessons learned from his time at Ohio State, aiming to build a successful program that resonates with players and fans alike. His commitment to excellence and community engagement sets a promising tone for USF football moving forward.
