A’ja Wilson capped off a remarkable season by leading the Las Vegas Aces to the WNBA championship, defeating the Phoenix Mercury in a decisive four-game sweep of the WNBA Finals. The victory marks another significant milestone in Wilson’s career, solidifying her status as one of the league’s all-time greats.
Wilson’s achievements during the 2025 season are unprecedented. She not only captured the WNBA MVP award but also secured the scoring title, was named the Finals MVP, and, notably, shared the Defensive Player of the Year award with Alanna Smith of the Minnesota Lynx. This combination of accolades has drawn comparisons to basketball legends such as Michael Jordan and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who achieved similar feats in their respective seasons.
After the championship win, Wilson expressed her thoughts on greatness, saying, “I still have a little more winning to do before you put me in the conversation with him, but when you’re compared to greats, that means you’re doing something right, and I am so grateful.” Her coach, Becky Hammon, interrupted her to emphasize her accomplishments, highlighting that Wilson’s numbers truly reflect greatness.
A Historic Achievement in Numbers
Wilson’s final performance in the title-clinching game was nothing short of spectacular. She recorded 31 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots, and two steals. This performance places her among an elite group in WNBA history, as only five players have achieved such a stat line in a single game, with Wilson accomplishing it three times.
Throughout the playoffs, she moved past Candace Parker to claim the third spot on the WNBA’s all-time playoff scoring list, now boasting 1,171 points. The only players ahead of her are Diana Taurasi and DeWanna Bonner, who have 1,486 and 1,291 points, respectively.
Wilson’s playoff totals for 2025 also set records, with 322 points and 120 rebounds in this year’s playoffs. This performance eclipsed previous highs and showcased her dominance throughout the postseason.
Continuing a Legacy of Excellence
Over the past five years, Wilson has consistently proven herself as a champion, accumulating six titles during this period. Her accolades include a gold medal with Team USA at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, a WNBA title in 2022, another gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and now her latest WNBA championship.
Wilson also set new WNBA records for total points and rebounds over the last three seasons. In 2023, she scored 1,126 points, followed by 1,149 points in 2024, and an impressive 1,259 points in 2025. She averaged 23.4 points and 10.2 rebounds during the regular season, becoming the first player in league history to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in multiple seasons.
Remarkably, Wilson achieved these milestones before turning 30, which will occur in August 2024. She holds the record for the most total points scored (including playoffs) before reaching this age, currently at 6,890. This statistic surpasses the previous record held by Lauren Jackson, who had 6,223 points at the same age.
As a player who continues to defy expectations, Wilson’s legacy only grows. With her remarkable achievements and sustained excellence, she is poised to inspire future generations of athletes in the WNBA and beyond.
