Review of Altra Timp 5 BOA After Off-Road Half Marathon

The Altra Timp 5 BOA has emerged as a noteworthy trail running shoe following its launch in February 2025, retailing for $175 in the United States and £155 in the United Kingdom. Designed for off-road enthusiasts, the shoe features a unique laceless design and a wide toe box, both hallmarks of the Altra brand. A recent trial of the Timp 5 BOA during the Kielder Half Marathon Trail Race highlighted its performance on challenging terrains.

This model’s distinctive features include a zero-drop platform, which promotes a natural running posture. The shoe’s cushioned midsole absorbs impact effectively, providing both comfort and protection against various trail obstacles. The zero-drop design allows for a more natural landing, potentially reducing the risk of injury.

Product Design and Features

The Altra Timp 5 BOA is available in three color combinations, catering to both men and women. Men can choose from white with coral, all black, or grey with orange, while women have options including white with coral, all black, or grey with pink. Sizes range from 7 to 15 for men and 5.5 to 12 for women. Although there is no specific wide-fit option, the shoe is designed to accommodate broader feet due to its naturally wide construction.

Weighing approximately 10 ounces, the Timp 5 BOA is heavier than many competitors, especially noticeable on paved surfaces. However, for those prioritizing off-road running, this weight is less of an issue. The shoe’s stack height of 29mm provides ample cushioning while still allowing runners to feel connected to the ground.

The upper is made from engineered mesh with TPU overlays, ensuring both durability and protection against debris. A GAITERTRAP tab at the heel allows runners to attach gaiters easily, enhancing the shoe’s versatility for varied trail conditions. One of the most significant changes from the previous model is the BOA Fit System, which replaces traditional laces with a twist dial mechanism for quick adjustments.

Performance Insights

During testing, the Timp 5 BOA exhibited impressive grip, thanks to its Vibram MegaGrip rubber outsole. The 3.5mm lugs provide excellent traction on various surfaces, including wet grass and loose gravel. This feature proved particularly beneficial during the Kielder Half Marathon, where the trail conditions were slick and muddy after Storm Amy.

Despite its strengths, some users may find the BOA system challenging, particularly those not accustomed to twist dial closures. Over longer distances, the pressure from the dial can become uncomfortable, particularly around the ankle. Some runners reported minor discomfort due to the upper straps, suggesting that a softer material could enhance overall comfort.

While performance on roads may seem clunky, the Timp 5 BOA shines on trails, offering stability and confidence on uneven ground. The midsole, made from Altra’s EGO MAX foam, ensures a soft yet supportive ride, absorbing impacts effectively over the 13.1-mile distance of the half marathon. Runners noted that while the cushioning might not provide the energy return seen in lighter shoes, it sufficiently prevents fatigue throughout longer runs.

The Timp 5 BOA stands out as an excellent choice for dedicated trail runners seeking comfort, traction, and protection. It caters well to those who primarily engage in off-road running, although those who frequently transition between road and trail might find it less suitable due to its weight and stiffness on hard surfaces.

In conclusion, the Altra Timp 5 BOA offers a combination of features tailored for trail running enthusiasts. Its ample toe space, reliable traction, and effective cushioning make it a solid option for those committed to navigating rugged terrains. For runners who prefer a lighter option or require more versatility for mixed-terrain routes, alternatives such as the Hoka Speedgoat 6 may be more appropriate.
