James Thomas Schermerhorn, known to many as Jim, passed away on December 1, 2025, at the age of 96 following a period of declining health. He was born on May 13, 1929, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to the late James and Edith Thomas Schermerhorn. His life was marked by notable achievements in both military service and the arts.
A Legacy of Service and Education
During the Korean War, Jim served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force, stationed at the Military Air Transport Headquarters. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, earning an Associate of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He completed his academic journey with a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Iowa.
Jim dedicated nearly three decades to teaching art at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, Florida, from 1963 to 1992, where he also held the position of Chair of the Art Department. In addition to his role at the high school, he contributed as an adjunct instructor at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida, sharing his passion for art with students and inspiring future generations.
A Multifaceted Passion
Beyond his teaching career, Jim was an accomplished artist, focusing on painting with acrylics and oils. He also found joy in cultivating daylilies, engaging in hybridization, and sharing this passion with fellow enthusiasts. His family fondly remembers his love for woodworking, traveling, and playing cards, all of which enriched their time together.
After relocating to North Carolina, Jim became an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. He served as an usher and contributed to the grounds committee, further exemplifying his commitment to community service.
His travels took him to various destinations, including Turkey, Europe, Hawaii, the American Southwest, Alaska, and both South and Central America. Each journey added to his rich tapestry of experiences and memories.
Jim leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 59 years, Leora Schermerhorn; sons Charlie (Carol) and Andy (Tatiana); grandchildren April (Jeff), Adam (Cassidy), Bella, and James; and great-grandchildren Bryson and Hunter. He is also survived by his sisters, Bonnie Pillivant (Don) and Carol Williams; brother, Dr. Richard (Renee) Schermerhorn; sister-in-law Shirley Steele; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on January 24, 2026, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church in Winter Park, Florida, where Jim and Leora exchanged vows in 1966. A reception will follow at 1044 Terrace Blvd., Orlando. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery will take place at a later date.
