Kristaps Porzingis made a notable return to the court on February 25, 2023, after missing six games due to health issues. In his second appearance with the Golden State Warriors, he scored nine points during a 104-97 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. This game marked a significant step in his recovery journey.
“I felt like my body is coming back to what it needs to be,” Porzingis stated following the game. He added that after one workout prior to the match, he felt “pretty decent.” Porzingis had previously warmed up before a road game against Houston and participated in a practice session the day before facing the Thunder.
Porzingis’ Health Journey Continues
During the game on Saturday night, Porzingis played for 23 minutes, contributing not only his nine points but also five rebounds, five assists, and one block. Reflecting on his health, he expressed optimism, saying, “I believe I will be healthy now. This is what I really feel.” He acknowledged the challenges he faced in recent weeks, admitting that his previous illnesses had disrupted his progress.
Porzingis was acquired by the Warriors from the Atlanta Hawks on February 4, 2023, and made his debut on February 19 against the Boston Celtics. After a promising start, he fell ill just two days later, leading to a six-game absence as the Warriors’ training staff worked to address his ongoing health issues.
His medical struggles include a diagnosis of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), an autonomic condition that can cause significant fatigue, dizziness, and an increased heart rate. Porzingis has been discreet about his health challenges, even as they have limited his performance, including a mere 17 games played for the Hawks prior to his trade.
Coaching Comments and Team Strategy
Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr stirred controversy last week when he suggested that Porzingis did not have POTS, labeling it “misinformation.” Kerr later retracted his statement, calling it a “stupid mistake.” Porzingis addressed the situation, stating, “It wasn’t ideal. Because it put something out again. So people start talking again.” He reassured Kerr that he understood the coach’s intentions were not to create unnecessary hype.
As the Warriors approach the end of the regular season, Porzingis plans to rest during their upcoming game against the Utah Jazz on February 27, as part of a back-to-back schedule. He aims to increase his playing minutes as the team prepares for the postseason, stating, “Only 20 games left or so, I want to catch a really good rhythm and see if we can do anything in the postseason.”
With playoffs on the horizon, the Warriors hope that Porzingis can regain his form and contribute significantly to their success. His return is eagerly anticipated as the team looks to solidify its position in the league.
