The Memphis Grizzlies announced on December 27, 2023, that center Zach Edey will miss an additional six weeks as he recovers from a stress reaction in his left ankle. Edey has been sidelined since December 7 and will continue his rehabilitation process during this extended recovery period.
The team, which is currently in Berlin for a matchup against the Orlando Magic, stated that Edey’s recovery plan is based on the unanimous recommendations from consulting experts. A reevaluation of his condition is scheduled to take place in approximately six weeks.
Edey, who stands at an impressive 7 feet 3 inches, was awarded the AP National Player of the Year title twice while playing for Purdue University. His rookie season was marked by challenges, including a sprained left ankle that caused him to miss 12 games. Despite these setbacks, he went on to participate in 66 games, showcasing his resilience.
In June 2023, Edey underwent surgery on his left ankle after being named to the All-Rookie first team. He experienced further complications, leading to him missing the first 13 games of the current season while he recuperated. Edey made his first appearance of the season on November 15 and has since averaged 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.
Alongside Edey, teammates Brandon Clarke and Scotty Pippen Jr. are also managing injuries. Clarke is expected to return to play in four to six weeks following a right calf strain sustained on December 20 against Washington. Pippen has been recovering from a toe procedure since October 21.
As the Grizzlies navigate through this challenging period, they will look to maintain their competitive edge in the league despite the absence of key players like Edey. With the team’s resilience and upcoming evaluations, fans remain hopeful for Edey’s successful recovery and return to the court.
