Fitness Influencers and Steroid Use: A Global Concern

Concerns about steroid use have surged globally, particularly as fitness influencers on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok openly discuss their experiences. A recent meta-study estimates that steroid use among gym-goers varies significantly, with figures ranging from 6 percent in some countries to as high as 29 percent in others. This trend has prompted researchers to examine the implications of this growing culture, particularly the potential health risks associated with unregulated steroid use.

Timothy Piatkowski from Griffith University in Australia highlights a noticeable shift in the past decade. Influencers frequently share their steroid use, positioning themselves as knowledgeable guides for followers looking to enhance their fitness. “Unfortunately, the level of clinical knowledge and critical thinking varies quite significantly in these groups,” Piatkowski notes, emphasizing the need for greater awareness of health risks among users.

The conversation on social media often presents conflicting views on the safety of steroids. Some influencers acknowledge the health risks but believe they can be managed, while others, dubbed “trenfluencers,” promote the use of trenbolone, a steroid primarily used in cattle. These differing attitudes contribute to confusion for millions seeking to bulk up safely.

Understanding the effects of steroids is essential for evaluating their safety. Anabolic androgenic steroids target hormone receptors that promote male sex characteristics and muscle growth. While these substances are medically prescribed to treat conditions such as muscle wasting, their non-medical use often involves combinations of various drugs, cycling, and high doses, practices not well-studied in scientific literature.

The risks associated with unregulated steroid use are considerable. Research shows that anabolic steroids can lead to severe cardiovascular issues, including increased blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels. A Danish population study revealed that users had a threefold higher risk of death compared to non-users, with cardiovascular disease being a leading cause.

Psychosocial effects also merit attention. “Roid rage,” characterized by aggression and psychosis, has been documented in some steroid users. Channa Jayasena from Imperial College London highlights the troubling correlation between steroid use and serious consequences, including suicides and violent behavior. Stopping steroid use can lead to depressive episodes, particularly when natural testosterone production is suppressed.

Despite the potential for harm, many users experiment with different dosing strategies to mitigate risks. These practices include post-cycle therapy, which can help restart natural testosterone production and reduce suicidal thoughts. Yet, comprehensive studies on the effectiveness of these protocols remain scarce.

The lack of controlled research complicates medical advice for steroid users. Greg James, a clinician at Kratos Medical in Cardiff, UK, notes that many of his patients are combining steroids with other substances, such as appetite-suppressing drugs. “I’ve got nothing to go on. We have no long-term safety data,” he says, reflecting the challenges faced by healthcare providers.

Engaging directly with steroid users is vital for developing relevant research. Piatkowski and his colleagues are exploring user experiences to inform studies better. Their recent findings revealed that over 20 percent of steroid samples sourced from users contained toxic substances, while more than half were incorrectly dosed. These revelations underscore the importance of addressing safety concerns within the community.

As the conversation around steroids continues to evolve, a collaborative approach may yield beneficial outcomes. By working together with influencers and users, researchers can promote safer practices and provide clearer guidance on the potential risks associated with steroid use. Piatkowski advocates for a shift in perspective, stating that “elevating and legitimizing knowledge in these communities is incredibly important.”

In an age where social media shapes perceptions and behaviors, addressing the complexities of steroid use is crucial for public health. The challenge remains to balance the pursuit of fitness with an informed understanding of the risks involved.
