Community Mourns the Loss of Kevin Ryan, Esteemed Statesman

Kevin Ryan, a prominent figure in Connecticut politics and a dedicated public servant, passed away on November 23, 2025, after a determined battle with cancer. He was 73 years old. Ryan is survived by his cousins, close friends, and a legacy of significant contributions to his community.

Born on August 1, 1952, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Kevin moved with his family to Montville, Connecticut, at the age of five. He completed his education at St. Bernard’s High School before pursuing higher education at Villanova University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He later received a Doctorate in Optometry and a Public Health certificate from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where he served on the Board of Trustees. Additionally, he held a Master of Arts in Community Psychology from the University of New Haven.

Ryan’s professional journey was marked by a commitment to service. He began his career at the Connecticut Visual Health Center in Bridgeport while also working in his family’s business, Uncas Foods, Inc. From 1980 onward, he served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Haven, where he taught Physics. His work with Mobile Medical Testing Service, which later became Exemplar Health Services, continued until 2003.

Ryan’s dedication to public service was evident throughout his life. He served on the Montville Board of Education for six years, including one year as Chairman. In 1992, he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, where he represented the 139th legislative district for 32 years. Ryan held several key positions, including Co-Chairman of the Labor and Public Employees Committee for eight years and Assistant Deputy Speaker Pro Tempore at the time of his passing.

On a national scale, Ryan was active in legislative organizations. He served as President and Treasurer of the National Conference of Legislators from Gaming States and as Treasurer of the Summit of Rural and Agricultural Leaders. Recently, he was elected National Chair of the Council of State Governments. His leadership extended to the National Council of State Legislatures as a member of the Agriculture Task Force and on the Executive Committee representing CSG/ERC.

Ryan was also deeply involved in various community organizations. He was a member of the Rotary, Elks, and Knights of Columbus, served as Chair of the Montville Democratic Town Committee, and acted as a Justice of the Peace. Additionally, he was President of the Board for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southeastern Connecticut and contributed to the Alliance for Living Board of Directors and the Eastern Connecticut Cable TV Advisory Board. He also chaired the Nuclear Energy Advisory Council.

He is remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his kindness and support in his personal relationships. The family expresses gratitude to the teams at Fairview Rehab and Nursing Home, West Hartford Health and Rehabilitation Center, and Yale New Haven Hospital for their compassionate care.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 16:00 to 19:00 at Cummings Gagne Funeral Home, located at 82 Cliff Street, Norwich, Connecticut. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 10:00 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 22 Maple Avenue, Uncasville, Connecticut. Attendees are asked to meet directly at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alliance for Living, Inc., at 154 Broad Street, New London, Connecticut 06320.

Kevin Ryan’s legacy will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his lifetime, reflecting a commitment to public service and community engagement.
