David Robert Theriault, a dedicated firefighter and member of the Avon community, passed away on January 15, 2026, at the age of 48, after a battle with occupational cancer. Surrounded by family and close friends, Theriault’s passing has left a deep impact on those who knew him.
Born and raised in Avon, Theriault graduated from Avon High School in the Class of 1996. His commitment to public service began early, joining the Avon Volunteer Fire Department as a cadet at the age of 14. He became a full member in 1995 and steadily advanced his career, ultimately serving as Lieutenant, Captain of Company 3, and Deputy Chief. Over the years, he earned numerous accolades, including the Avon Police Department Citizen Award in 2019 for his leadership during the Avon Volunteer Fire Department’s 75th Anniversary Celebration and the Firefighters Convention held in 2018.
In 2011, Theriault transitioned to the Town of Avon Public Works Department, having previously worked at Riverdale Farms for many years. His unwavering dedication to the community was evident in his readiness to assist anyone in need, whether they were family, friends, or neighbors. Loved by many, Theriault’s legacy of selflessness and compassion will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Theriault is survived by his parents, Robert and Diane (Firnhaber) Theriault, his teenage sons, Trevor and Jacob, and his sister, Kristen Theriault Shaw, along with her children, Kaylei and Dylan. He is also survived by his former spouses, Rachel and Kristie Theriault, and their children, Kyle, Madisyn, and Morgan Pelletier, as well as his grandson, Ryan, and his girlfriend, Gina Kline. Theriault’s family has expressed gratitude to the friends who provided support and care during his final weeks.
Memorial Services Scheduled in Avon
Family and friends will gather to honor Theriault on January 22 from 15:00 to 18:00 at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, located at 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Funeral Service will take place the following day, January 23, at 13:00 at the West Avon Congregational Church, situated at 280 Country Club Road, Avon, followed by Fire Fighter Honors. Additional parking will be available at the Avon Library or the Carmon Funeral Home.
Theriault’s burial will be private, taking place at the West Avon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the David Theriault Trust, which will benefit his sons, Trevor and Jacob. Donations can be sent to Kristen Shaw, 39 Craigemore Circle, Avon, CT 06001.
