Apple Watch Ultra 3: Five Key Upgrades Users Want to See

The anticipation surrounding the release of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is building, as it is expected to debut in September 2024. This upcoming model will be the first new entry in the Ultra series since the Ultra 2 was launched in 2023. With numerous rumors circulating about potential features, users are eager to see which enhancements Apple will introduce to elevate its premium smartwatch experience.

While speculation includes a larger display, improved battery efficiency, and a built-in camera, many users are focusing on specific upgrades that could significantly enhance functionality. As a leading smartwatch reviewer at Tom’s Guide, I have identified five enhancements that could make the Apple Watch Ultra 3 a standout device in the market.

1. Off-Grid Emergency Communications

There have been leaks suggesting that the Apple Watch Ultra 3 may include an emergency communication feature designed for use in remote areas where traditional connectivity is unavailable. Such a tool would complement existing safety features like fall and crash detection, providing users with peace of mind during outdoor adventures. Notably, Google is also rumored to be developing a similar feature for its upcoming Pixel Watch 4. The introduction of off-grid communication capabilities would enhance the Ultra 3’s appeal to outdoor enthusiasts.

2. High Blood Pressure Alerts

The potential for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 to offer high blood pressure alerts may mark a significant advancement in health monitoring. Despite many upcoming smartwatches claiming to incorporate hypertension monitoring, none have yet succeeded in delivering this feature. Given that hypertension often goes undiagnosed, the ability to monitor blood pressure could transform the Ultra 3 into a more comprehensive health tool, particularly alongside the anticipated return of SpO2 monitoring for users in the United States.

3. Daily Sleep Score

While the Apple Watch Ultra 2 does provide sleep-tracking capabilities, it currently lacks a daily numeric sleep score, a feature offered by several competing brands. Leading smartwatches from Garmin, Samsung, and Pixel provide users with a score that assesses sleep quality based on various metrics. A daily sleep score could help users make informed decisions about their daily activities, particularly if they experience a low score, indicating that a night out may not be ideal.

4. Daily Energy Score

In addition to a sleep score, users are increasingly interested in a daily energy score, which assesses energy levels based on sleep quality, physical activity, and overall health trends. Garmin introduced its “Body Battery” feature in 2018, while Fitbit launched a similar “Readiness Score” in 2021. With this feature, users could better gauge their readiness for physical activity and potentially identify health issues before they escalate.

5. Loss of Pulse Detection

Finally, an eagerly anticipated feature would be the introduction of loss of pulse detection, similar to what is currently available on the Pixel Watch 3. This function would automatically alert emergency services or designated contacts if a user experiences a loss or abnormal pulse. As smartwatch technology continues to evolve, it is likely that major players like Apple will seek to adopt similar features that enhance user safety.

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 holds the potential to bring meaningful upgrades that cater to user needs and preferences. While rumors and speculation abound, the confirmed features will ultimately determine its success in a competitive market. As the launch date approaches, consumers will be keenly watching for updates from Apple to see how the next generation of its smartwatch will address these critical user demands.
