Tron: Ares Set for Strong Box Office Debut Despite Mixed Reviews

Disney’s upcoming film Tron: Ares is poised for a significant box office debut, projected to earn between $45 million and $50 million in its opening weekend across North America. With a packed release schedule that includes new films such as Roofman and Kiss of the Spider Woman, the competition for audience attention is intense as theaters prepare for the release on October 10, 2025.

Tron: Ares Anticipated Performance

According to Variety, Tron: Ares is expected to mirror the performance of its predecessor, Tron: Legacy, which opened at $44 million in 2010, not adjusted for inflation. The original film, released in 1982, grossed $50 million worldwide against a production budget of $17 million. In contrast, Tron: Ares comes with a hefty reported production cost of $180 million, making it the most expensive installment in the franchise.

Internationally, projections indicate that the film could earn between $40 million and $45 million, potentially leading to a global debut figure as high as $95 million. The film’s narrative revolves around humanity’s first contact with artificial intelligence, showcasing a digital program that breaks into the real world.

Cast and Creative Team

Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film features a star-studded cast led by Jared Leto as Ares. Joining him are Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson. Notably, Jeff Bridges reprises his iconic role as Kevin Flynn from earlier films, including Tron: Legacy. The soundtrack, composed by Nine Inch Nails, is set to be released by Interscope Records.

Despite receiving mixed early reviews, with a current 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 97 critics, audience tracking suggests a surprising level of interest among viewers. This raises expectations for the film’s performance, particularly in light of its substantial production budget.

In addition to Tron: Ares, Roofman is expected to debut with earnings between $8 million and $12 million. This film stars Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst. Meanwhile, Kiss of the Spider Woman, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna, is projected to open with earnings of between $1.5 million and $3 million.

Tron: Ares aims to captivate audiences more than four decades after the original film’s release. As the box office race heats up, all eyes will be on how it performs against its competitors and whether it can achieve the heights anticipated by its backers.
