Top Films of 2025 Revealed by AP Writers; Clooney Reflects on Fame

The Associated Press has released its rankings of the best films of 2025, highlighting a year that, despite mixed box office results, delivered significant artistic achievements. Topping the list is Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, “One Battle After Another,” which has garnered acclaim from AP film writers Lindsey Bahr and Jake Coyle. Both critics also included titles such as “Marty Supreme,” “It Was Just an Accident,” and “Sinners.”

Bahr’s personal selections showcase her appreciation for varied storytelling, including “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” “Sentimental Value,” and a fresh take on the classic “The Naked Gun.” Meanwhile, Coyle’s list features “No Other Choice,” the third installment of the “Knives Out” series, as well as “Blue Moon” and the thought-provoking documentary “Afternoons of Solitude.”

Clooney’s New Role Explores Fame and Regrets

In a different corner of the entertainment landscape, George Clooney takes on a reflective role in the film “Jay Kelly,” which premieres on Netflix this Friday. Co-written and directed by Noah Baumbach, the film features a star-studded cast including Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, and Billy Crudup. Clooney portrays a movie star grappling with regrets, drawing parallels between his character’s life and his own experiences in Hollywood.

The production process encouraged the cast to delve deeper into their roles; Sandler shadowed his agent to prepare for his portrayal of Jay Kelly’s manager, while Dern followed her publicist to enhance her performance.

RoboCop Statue Finds Home in Detroit

In a nostalgic nod to cinema history, a statue of the iconic character RoboCop has been installed in Detroit, Michigan. Standing at an impressive 11 feet tall and weighing 3,500 pounds, the bronze statue was revealed on Wednesday in the Eastern Market area. Local fans have expressed their excitement over the statue, which celebrates the 1987 film set in a crime-stricken future Detroit.

Jim Toscano, who runs a film production company nearby, noted that many fans have visited since the installation. Interestingly, Detroit has seen a significant drop in crime rates, with homicide numbers now below mid-1960s levels. The statue’s installation proceeded without opposition from city officials, reflecting the character’s enduring legacy.

Critique of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Offers Mixed Reviews

The latest sequel, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” has opened to critical mixed reviews. Mark Kennedy, an AP critic, describes the film as building on its predecessor’s chaotic narrative but failing to clarify its plot. Directed by Emma Tammi and featuring returning cast members Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail, the film introduces a new character, The Marionette, which Kennedy believes is underutilized.

The film, rated PG-13 for violent content and language, continues to explore the unsettling world of murderous animatronics while leaving audiences questioning their intentions.

Creative Director Dario Vitale Exits Versace

In the fashion industry, Dario Vitale has announced his departure from the Italian luxury brand Versace, just eight months after his appointment. This news follows the recent acquisition of Versace by Prada Group for $1.375 billion, marking a significant transition for the brand. Vitale’s exit is effective December 12, and the company has indicated that a successor will be named in due course.

Despite his brief tenure, Versace expressed gratitude for Vitale’s contributions, as the brand prepares for a new chapter under Prada’s ownership.

Recognition for ‘One Battle After Another’

As award season approaches, “One Battle After Another” is emerging as a frontrunner. The film recently secured the Best Film award at the 35th Gotham Awards, followed by similar accolades from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review Awards.
