NBC’s crime drama series “The Hunting Party” returned for its second season with a significant twist that has left viewers stunned. In a dramatic unveiling during the season premiere on January 8, 2024, it was confirmed that Oliver Odell, played by Nick Wechsler, did not survive the poisoning incident that occurred at the end of season one. The revelation came when FBI agent Bex Henderson, portrayed by Melissa Roxburgh, was seen mourning the loss of her former partner.
The unexpected death of Oliver Odell was confirmed offscreen, leading to a wave of reactions from fans who were caught off guard by the storyline shift. Despite Wechsler being listed as a cast member in NBC’s press release, the creative team had decided that Oliver’s character arc had reached its conclusion. Executive producer JJ Bailey explained to TVLine that the team “wrestled” with the decision, ultimately concluding that it was difficult to continue Oliver’s involvement in the narrative without repetition.
Bailey stated, “One thing that we sort of faced was creatively, it was hard to involve [Oliver] in the field and to find stories that felt like it really serviced what we wanted to do with the character and with Bex.” His colleague, executive producer Jake Coburn, added that Oliver’s deep connection to Bex’s past had been explored extensively. He noted, “We were more looking in terms of the characters that were going to be part of her future story, and felt like we’d squeezed all the juice from the relationship that we could.”
Roxburgh, who had no prior knowledge of Wechsler’s departure when filming the season one finale, expressed her hopes for Oliver’s survival. “It was left on a cliffhanger, so I’m like, ‘OK, maybe there’s hope that he’s not dead,’” she remarked. Roxburgh felt that the storyline needed closure, yet acknowledged the dramatic twist could enhance viewer engagement. “I think that audiences will be more inclined to tune in because I think that they weren’t expecting that,” she concluded.
As season two progresses, Bex reassembles her team to continue the pursuit of escaped serial killers, a plotline central to the series. The introduction of Eve Lazarus, played by Kari Matchett, brings new dynamics to the group as she takes on the role of team leader. Roxburgh revealed that Bex and her colleagues remain wary of Lazarus, whose enigmatic backstory adds an element of intrigue.
“The Hunting Party” continues to air on NBC every Thursday at 22:00 ET, with episodes available for streaming on Peacock the following day. Fans can expect a season filled with suspense, character development, and unexpected twists as Bex navigates the challenges ahead.
