Taylor Swift has opened up about her rigorous workout routine designed to prepare her for the demanding Eras Tour, which commenced in March 2023 and continues through December 2024. In a recent episode of the docuseries, *The End of an Era*, released on December 19, Swift described her training as “horrible” yet necessary for the three-plus hour performances.
“I’ve never worked out this much in my life,” she joked. To ensure peak physical condition, Swift began her fitness regimen six months before rehearsals started, engaging in daily treadmill sessions that matched the tempo of her songs while singing along. “I think I run like eight miles in this show,” she noted, highlighting the endurance required for her longest tour yet. Previous performances for Swift lasted about two hours and fifteen minutes, but she aims for a more ambitious experience this time.
Intensive Training Regimen
The docuseries offers a glimpse into Swift’s training sessions with fitness trainer Kirk Myers. The two tackled a variety of strength exercises, including pull-ups, which Swift humorously described as one of her least favorite forms of training. “In no way do I ever apply this at any point in the show,” she remarked about the pull-ups, adding, “I just want to flag that as I do every time I have to do pull-ups.”
In addition to strength training, Myers incorporated cardio drills, such as swinging a hammer for arm toning and using a weighted ball during sit-ups. For Swift, the physical demands of the tour go beyond just performing; she emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and stamina on stage. “Saying it is one thing, doing it is another,” she stated, insisting that the audience should not see her panting during a show.
Addressing Challenges and Giving Back
The docuseries also touches on some of the emotional challenges Swift faced during the tour, particularly following the cancellation of her August 2024 concerts in Vienna due to a terror plot. “We dodged, like, a massacre situation,” she reflected, acknowledging the fear surrounding the incident. Shortly after, a tragic event occurred in Southport, England, where three children were killed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. Swift met privately with survivors and families of the victims, expressing her deep empathy and connection to those affected.
Backstage at her Wembley shows, Swift was visibly emotional, sharing a moment with her mother, Andrea Swift, who reassured her, “I know you helped them.” These personal encounters illustrate Swift’s commitment to her fans and the broader community.
As the tour progresses, Swift has also made headlines for her generosity. Each leg of the Eras Tour concluded with bonuses for every crew member, dancer, and musician involved. “If the tour grosses more, they get more of a bonus,” she noted, emphasizing the hard work of her team and the importance of recognizing their contributions.
In a lighter moment, NFL player Travis Kelce, who has been spotted at her shows, expressed his enthusiasm for the tour in a phone call with Swift, declaring, “I want to be there!” This interaction highlights the crossover appeal of Swift’s music and the excitement it generates among fans, including those from other fields.
Swift also sought creative advice from actress Emma Stone during the planning of the tour. Stone recommended choreographer Mandy Moore, who has collaborated on notable projects like *La La Land*. This collaboration underscores Swift’s dedication to high-quality production and choreography.
To maintain the element of surprise for her fans, Swift and her band took extra precautions during rehearsals. They would lower the volume on the PA system to prevent any leaked details about surprise performances. “It is so much extra work to keep things a surprise,” she stated, emphasizing the effort involved in delivering an unforgettable experience.
Through intense training, emotional resilience, and thoughtful planning, Swift is setting a high bar for live performances. Her commitment to both her art and her fans continues to resonate, making the Eras Tour a landmark event in her career.
