The recent release of God of War: Sons of Sparta has generated significant frustration among players due to unclear co-op requirements. This title, which was unexpectedly announced and launched during the State of Play showcase on March 15, 2024, serves as a prequel focusing on the early years of Kratos and his brother Deimos. Unlike previous installments, this game adopts a 2D Metroidvania style, marking a departure from the franchise’s established format.
With no traditional marketing campaign and limited pre-release reviews, players had only a brief trailer and a description from the PlayStation Store to guide them. The store indicated that Sons of Sparta offered a two-player co-op mode, leading many players to expect this feature to be available from the start. However, upon initiating gameplay, players discovered that the co-op option was inaccessible until they had completed the main story.
Developer Response to Player Concerns
The confusion surrounding the co-op functionality prompted a response from Santa Monica Studio, one of the developers behind the game. They clarified that players must first finish the main storyline to unlock the co-op challenge mode, which can be played solo or with a local player. In a statement shared on X, the studio explained, “After completing Sons of Sparta’s main story, you will unlock a challenge mode that can be played solo or with local 2-player couch co-op.” This announcement, rather than alleviating player frustrations, seemed to exacerbate them.
Many players expressed dissatisfaction with the requirement to complete the game solo before accessing co-op play. One user on Reddit voiced the sentiment shared by many, stating, “A whole part of wanting to play co-op games like this is so you can share the experience with others. Why would I want to play the game fully by myself then play it again with someone else?” Others contemplated seeking refunds from Sony, feeling misled by the promotional materials.
This design choice has raised eyebrows, especially given the game’s thematic focus on the relationship between two brothers. Players are eager for co-op experiences, and locking such a mode until after the first playthrough appears counterintuitive. One Reddit user remarked, “We’re all starved for couch co-op content these days anyway, so it seems really silly to lock this behind a first playthrough.”
Reception and Future of the Franchise
Despite the co-op controversy, many players have reported enjoying the game, particularly its engaging combat mechanics. An active thread on Reddit showcased positive first impressions, noting that while it may not redefine the Metroidvania genre, it offers an enjoyable experience that expands on Kratos’ backstory.
However, the franchise creator, David Jaffe, has publicly criticized Sons of Sparta. In a review published on YouTube, he expressed his disappointment, stating, “I don’t like it. I don’t recommend it. … What the [expletive] are they thinking?” Although he acknowledged that it is “not a bad game,” he questioned the necessity of its existence, despite having previously expressed interest in a 2.5D version of God of War. Jaffe admitted to playing only an hour of the game, declaring he would not return to it.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is currently available on PlayStation 5. For those deterred by the co-op limitations, it’s worth noting that during the same State of Play event, a remake of the original God of War trilogy was also announced, although this project remains in the early stages of development without a specified release date.
