The Pennsylvania Tourism Office has introduced a unique winter hotline aimed at encouraging residents and visitors to explore the state’s attractions. The hotline, which features pre-recorded messages in regional accents, offers callers a distinctive way to discover activities and events taking place throughout the winter season.
1-877-SNWFUN1 is the number for the new hotline, where callers can navigate a menu of options voiced by actors using classic Pittsburgh and Philadelphia accents. This initiative aims to create an engaging experience for users, making the process of planning winter outings feel more personal. As the greeting states, “Yo dere. Thanks for cawlling the Visit PA Snow Day hawtline.”
Connecting with Local Culture
Katie Burger, the executive director of Visit PA, expressed her desire to capture the essence of Pennsylvania’s local culture through these accents. She noted, “I really wanted it to feel like you’re meeting up with someone at Wawa or Sheetz and having a conversation with them about what they did this weekend.” The hotline is designed not only for tourists but also for locals looking to discover what their state has to offer during the colder months.
The hotline will remain active until February 23, 2024. During this period, live operators will also be available on Friday evenings, providing personalized recommendations in their regional dialects. Comedian Betsy Kenney, known for her viral ASMR videos, will take calls while embracing an exaggerated Philadelphia accent. She aims to provide callers with unique insights into winter activities, stating, “I could talk to a wall. I could talk about anything, anytime.”
The live operators will enrich the experience by offering tailored suggestions, thus fostering a sense of community and familiarity in the advice they provide.
A Blend of Tradition and Modern Engagement
While the hotline offers an old-school experience, it complements digital resources available on the Visit PA website. Burger highlighted the trend of individuals wanting to disconnect from screens, noting, “I see such a trend online now of people wanting to disconnect from screens and get back to that ‘analog vibe.’” The initiative aims to draw attention to the variety of winter-related activities available, from outdoor adventures to cozy indoor experiences.
The hotline encourages exploration of iconic attractions such as the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, where children can engage in interactive exhibits. The recorded messages are designed to be both informative and entertaining, utilizing local vernacular to make the information relatable.
Burger emphasized that the initiative is particularly appealing to Pennsylvanians exploring their own state. The accents serve as an “Easter egg” for those familiar with the local dialects, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience.
As the winter season unfolds, the Pennsylvania Tourism Office’s hotline stands as a creative effort to engage both locals and visitors. By combining regional charm with practical information, the initiative invites everyone to embrace the winter offerings of Pennsylvania.
