In Plant City, Florida, a new venue is transforming the traditional comic book store experience. Plant City Comics Café, also known as PC3, combines a vibrant selection of comics with a café atmosphere, featuring a menu inspired by global cuisine. The café, which opened recently, aims to attract a diverse audience, from comic book enthusiasts to families seeking a welcoming gathering space.
Unique Concept Blends Comics and Cuisine
Owner Michelle Irving, a 55-year-old Army veteran, decided to venture into the comic book business as a way to support her husband, Sherrick Irving, who has a lifelong passion for comics. “You can’t keep standing next to somebody and not see their dreams met,” she expressed, highlighting the personal motivation behind the venture.
The couple’s travels around the globe served as inspiration for their collection. “Every time we traveled, my husband would always visit comic book shops,” Michelle noted. While comics were not initially her interest, she saw an opportunity to create a space that caters to Sherrick’s enthusiasm while also offering something unique to the community.
Among the numerous items available at PC3, visitors can find a mix of new releases, classic comics, rare collectibles, and popular merchandise like Funko Pops. Sherrick emphasized that the café also features sought-after titles such as Ghost Rider No. 1, which has gained popularity among collectors.
Community Engagement and Safe Spaces
PC3 is more than just a retail space; it aims to foster a sense of community. The café hosts events such as Dungeons and Dragons game nights and plans to introduce trivia nights, creating an inviting environment for all ages. Michelle hopes that PC3 will serve as a safe space where children and families can gather to share their interests and passions.
In addition to its community focus, the café has seen a strong interest in comic subscriptions, with Batman No. 1 currently topping the bestseller list. The Irvings are dedicated to curating a collection that reflects their love for comics and their commitment to serving Plant City.
For those interested in exploring the world of comics in a unique setting, Plant City Comics Café stands out not just as a store, but as a vibrant community hub. Visitors can discover a new favorite comic while enjoying a meal, making it a distinctive addition to the local landscape.
