KATSEYE Voices Concerns Over Death Threats Amid Grammy Nominations

The South Korean girl group KATSEYE has disclosed that they have received multiple death threats since their debut, coinciding with their recent nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. In an interview with BBC News, the members expressed their distress over the threats, which have reportedly also targeted their families.

Lara, one of the group’s members, shared her feelings about the situation, stating, “I try to tell myself it doesn’t matter, but if 1,000 people are sending you death threats, it’s jarring. Even if it’s not going to happen, it’s heavy.” The group refrained from providing specific details about the nature of the threats but emphasized the impact they have felt in their short careers.

Facing Online Harassment and Sexism

In addition to the threats, KATSEYE revealed that they have encountered a significant amount of online harassment, often of a sexist nature. Lara highlighted a troubling trend whereby people evaluate the group based on their appearances and talents, stating, “People see us as women to rank. They’ll grade us based on how attractive we are, our singing and dancing skills, and then add it all up to give us a percentage.”

Despite these challenges, the group has remained steadfast in their commitment to promoting diversity and empowerment. Manon, another member, articulated their mission, saying, “We exist for girls who are proud of their backgrounds. We want them to feel proud, regardless of their appearance or background.” This message of inclusivity is central to their identity and resonates with many of their fans.

Musical Milestones and Future Aspirations

KATSEYE has made significant strides in the music industry, recently entering global charts with their second EP, Beautiful Chaos, which was released in May 2023. Their success has been accompanied by scrutiny and debate, especially regarding their target audience and the marketing strategies employed by their management at HYBE.

As the group navigates the complexities of fame, they continue to advocate for a supportive community among their fans, particularly young women. Their journey thus far highlights both the challenges and triumphs that come with being a rising star in the competitive world of entertainment.

The ongoing situation raises important questions about the safety and well-being of artists in the public eye, as well as the broader culture surrounding female performers. As KATSEYE prepares for the Grammy Awards, their experiences serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance and support in the face of adversity.
