The thriller series Lazarus, created by Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst, concluded its first season with a shocking finale that left audiences eager for more. The six-episode series, available on Prime Video since October 22, 2023, centers on Joel, portrayed by Sam Claflin, a forensic psychologist returning home to unravel mysteries surrounding his father’s suicide.
While viewers are buzzing about the unexpected twists, questions remain about a potential second season. Coben addressed these inquiries during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, stating, “I’ve never done a season 2 — and we’ve been offered them in the past.” He emphasized that he would only pursue another season if he felt it would surpass the original. “We opened a little bit of a door to have a little fun with you at the end,” Coben added, clarifying that the conclusion is not a traditional cliffhanger but rather an invitation for further exploration.
In the finale, several key revelations come to light. Joel, while sorting through his father Dr. L’s office, begins experiencing visions of deceased patients, leading him to uncover cold cases. As the plot unfolds, viewers learn that the first killer is Sam Olsen, played by Edward Hogg, who had a deadly obsession with Joel’s twin sister, Sutton, portrayed by Eloise Little.
The second killer, however, is Dr. L himself, played by Bill Nighy. As his secrets unravel, he faces a grim fate. The final twist is particularly shocking: Joel’s son, Aidan, played by Curtis Tennant, emerges as the third killer, brandishing a bloody sickle in the last scene. Claflin remarked, “The last episode completely blew my mind. I did not see it coming.”
Reflecting on the finale, Claflin expressed optimism about Joel’s fate. “I think Joel absolutely does not get killed. No way,” he stated, suggesting a potential continuation for the character. He likened the situation to the popular series Dexter, indicating that Joel could navigate his challenges while remaining a compelling protagonist.
While Coben remains non-committal about a second season, he acknowledged the audience’s role in determining the series’ future. “It’s up to an audience, and if people really want that,” he noted. “I think it [was] beautifully left open-ended.”
As viewers delve into the intricate storyline of Lazarus, all episodes are currently streaming on Prime Video, waiting for fans to dissect its twists and turns. The combination of strong performances and unexpected plot developments has undoubtedly set the stage for discussions about what lies ahead in this captivating narrative.
