Born on September 17, 1943, in Elizabeth City, Virginia, Joe served proudly in the United States Air Force. His dedication to service extended beyond his military commitments, as he cultivated a jovial spirit that endeared him to friends and family alike. Joe was known for his infectious humor, often engaging those around him with a twinkle in his eye and a well-timed joke.

During his professional career, Joe spent nearly two decades as a Senior Systems Analyst at Hershey Foods. His innovative solutions enhanced customer experiences, and his retirement in 1999 marked a transition into a life filled with new adventures.

Passion for Music and Family Adventures

A talented trombone player, Joe contributed to various musical groups, including the Keystone Band in Rehrersburg. For an impressive 25 years, he was a member of the Washington Band of Annville, where he shared his love for music with the community. His influence extended to the arts as he performed for Tulpehocken High School Musicals, inspiring younger generations to embrace their creative pursuits.

Their 54-year marriage was filled with numerous adventures, from cross-country road trips with their children to leisurely cruises around the globe. As their family grew, they cherished the opportunity to create lasting memories with their children and grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley, and their three children: Jeffrey L. Ritter, Kristie B. Grier and her husband Andrew M. Grier, Jr., and Isabelle Condou alongside her partner Jean-Nicolas Schoeser. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Samantha D. Grier, Benjamin A. Grier, Asher I. Grier, Holton M. Ritter, Eliana O. Grier, Zachariyah Z. Grier, Nevaeh B. Ritter, Ethan I. Grier, Emilien Sallard, Gabriel Sallard, and Vania Condou-Schoeser. A burial service will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 11:30 AM. A visitation will follow at Kirkhoff Funeral Home in Bernville, starting at 1:30 PM, leading into the funeral service at 2:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Joe’s name to the Washington Band of Annville, located at 35 North Lancaster Street, Annville, PA 17003.

As family and friends gather to celebrate Joe’s remarkable life, they will remember him not only for his humor and musical talent but also for his unwavering love for family and friends.
