DJs Depart TikTok Live as New Rules Limit Music Sharing

DJs are leaving TikTok Live in response to new terms of service that restrict their ability to perform using copyrighted music. The updates, effective from July 2023, alter the platform’s Music Terms of Service, making it difficult for DJs to share their mixes during live performances.

While TikTok has not officially banned DJs from using the platform, the policy changes have raised concerns among many artists. The new rules prohibit modifications to copyrighted music or the use of standalone audio tracks. This means that DJs must own full rights to any songs they wish to perform live, a requirement that poses significant challenges, particularly for those working from home.

Some DJs, like DJ Lost One, have already announced their intentions to shift to other platforms. He plans to continue his livestreams on Twitch, a platform popular among gamers. In a message to his followers, he cautioned against taking risks on TikTok, stating, “You can lose Live access [if you stream music]. Please don’t risk it.”

The sentiment among many DJs is one of nostalgia for the platform’s original focus on music. Viewers in the comments expressed disappointment, remarking that TikTok initially thrived as a music app that fostered connections among artists. One user lamented, “Not allowing someone to make their own beats and not allowing cover artists is such a huge sign that it’s a sterilization and control metric.”

Despite the widespread concern, some DJs are considering creative ways to adapt to the new rules. A commenter noted that while music can still play in the background, DJs must talk over it to comply with the updated guidelines. Another mentioned that live performances at venues might still be possible, as venues typically pay for the rights to use music, thereby allowing for public domain performances.

As the DJ community navigates these changes, reactions continue to unfold. Many artists express a commitment to find ways to remain active on TikTok, even as they grapple with the limitations imposed by the updated terms.

The Daily Dot has reached out to DJ Lost One for additional comments on this situation and its impact on the DJ community. As the landscape of live music sharing evolves, it remains to be seen how artists will adapt and what alternatives they will pursue.
