JoAnn Slocum, a cherished member of her community, passed away on January 4, 2026, following a brief illness. Originally from Schenectady, New York, she was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mary DePalma Popolizio. JoAnn’s legacy lives on through her husband, David Slocum, of Niskayuna, their son Christopher Slocum, and her beloved grandchildren Cameron, Jack, and Gabriella “GG” Slocum, who reside in Connecticut.
JoAnn and David’s love story began at Alpert’s Furniture Store, where they met while working together—David as the sales manager and JoAnn as the credit manager. This initial connection blossomed into a beautiful marriage that lasted for over 50 years.
JoAnn was passionate about reading and dedicated many years of her life to working at Craig Elementary School in the Niskayuna School District. After her retirement, she enjoyed spending time at the Schenectady Yacht Club, taking trips in her RV, and creating lasting memories with her grandchildren, especially during visits to Mystic and the Finger Lakes.
Her family and friends remember her as someone who consistently thought of others. JoAnn never failed to celebrate special occasions, ensuring that birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays were acknowledged. In recent years, she faced personal challenges with remarkable bravery and resilience, inspiring those around her.
Community Farewell and Memorial Service
The community will have an opportunity to pay their respects during calling hours on January 15, 2026, from 15:30 to 17:00 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. A memorial service will follow at 17:00. In accordance with JoAnn’s family’s wishes, a private burial will take place at a later date at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

JoAnn Slocum will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the community she touched throughout her life. Her warmth and kindness will remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
