Beta Film has acquired the international distribution rights to the Bosnian mystery crime series “Komar,” which premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival last year. This series, produced by BH Telecom in collaboration with SCCA/Pro.ba, marks the third project resulting from the partnership between BH Telecom and Beta Film, following the success of “I Know Your Soul” and “The Hollow.”
The eight-hour series adds to Beta’s expanding roster of high-quality programming from the Balkans. Notable titles include the acclaimed Serbian series “Operation Sabre,” which recently gained attention for its masterful storytelling and was recognized by critics from Spiegel and Télérama. Other regional highlights feature “I Know Your Soul,” directed by Jasmila Žbanić, the Bulgarian drama “Shattered Bonds,” and the long-running Greek hit “The Beach.”
Plot Overview and Creative Team
“Komar” centers on Mersiha, whose boyfriend Miki disappears without a trace while traveling by bus through the Komar mountains.
In her quest to find him, Mersiha teams up with her best friend Jasna. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they soon discover that several other travelers are also trapped on the bus, which has become lost in a remote area with no cellphone coverage or means of returning to civilization. As dark forces work against them, the tension escalates, and the stakes become increasingly high.
The series is helmed by showrunner Timur Makarevic, with directing duties shared between Vedran Rupic and Una Gunjak. The lead roles are portrayed by Lejla Hakalovic, Pia Vrdoljak, and Igor Skvarica.
Beta Film is present at the current edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival, represented by Julia Schweiger, a senior executive at Beta’s Kids & YA division. Schweiger is participating as a panelist in the Cinelink discussion titled “From SKAM to SRAM: Youth Drama, Public Broadcasters, and the Power of Adaptation.”
With its compelling narrative and strong production team, “Komar” is poised to capture the attention of international audiences seeking gripping storytelling from the Balkans.
