Two vibrant light festivals are lighting up the Bay Area this week, showcasing stunning public art installations that will reach heights of eight stories. The festivals, taking place in Palo Alto and Oakland, promise to offer unique experiences for attendees of all ages.
Code:ART 2025 kicks off in Palo Alto from October 16 to 25, 2023. This free festival runs nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and features an array of dynamic projections and immersive environments. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet local and international artists during the opening days from October 16 to 18. According to the Palo Alto Public Art Program, visitors can expect an engaging atmosphere filled with “responsive sound, light, and game-based experiences.”
A highlight of Code:ART 2025 is the display of eight-story artworks created by 3D projection-mapping artists. These installations will be projected onto the facade of City Hall, located at 250 Hamilton Avenue, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. each night. Other attractions include an alley transformed into a movement-activated hall of lights and an interactive installation known as the “Screamaton,” which combines a photo booth with a rage cage. The festival will also feature nightly performances in King Plaza, along with live music and pop-up concerts throughout downtown Palo Alto.
Meanwhile, the Autumn Lights Festival is set to dazzle Oakland from October 16 to 18, 2023, running from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.. Now in its 14th year, this annual event serves as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Gardens at Lake Merritt. The festival will showcase approximately 75 glowing artworks created by local artists at the gardens located at 666 Bellevue Avenue.
The Gardens at Lake Merritt, established in the 1950s, spans seven acres and features a scenic blend of water and forested areas, including bonsai and rhododendron groves. While the gardens provide a peaceful retreat during the day for birdwatchers, they will transform into a captivating, illuminated wonderland at night. Last year’s Autumn Lights Festival featured nature-themed installations, including vibrant pink squids, a towering mushroom reminiscent of the Mario Bros. universe, and light-decorated trees reflected in the lake.
Tickets for the Autumn Lights Festival are priced at $32 for adults and $15 for children aged 6-17, with fees included. They can be purchased through the festival’s official website at gardensatlakemerritt.org.
Both festivals offer an exciting opportunity for residents and visitors to experience the artistic vibrancy of the Bay Area, celebrating creativity through light and interactive art.
