Fans of the beloved sitcom Broad City can officially put their hopes for a revival on hold. In a recent interview with Us Weekly, co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson confirmed that there are currently no discussions taking place regarding a reboot of the series. Jacobson stated, “We have not talked about doing a revival. I think we just love the show as it is. I don’t know if we want to mess with it.” This sentiment reflects both Jacobson’s and fellow co-creator Ilana Glazer‘s desire to preserve the original magic of the show, which aired on Comedy Central from 2014 to 2019.
The show, which is based on the real-life friendship of Jacobson and Glazer, depicted the adventures of two women navigating life in New York City. Jacobson pointed out the trend of revivals in contemporary television, noting, “There’s so many revivals. People want to mess with it, but they don’t always land.”
While a revival may be off the table, Jacobson remains enthusiastic about future collaborations with Glazer. Following the premiere of Jacobson’s new Netflix series, Long Story Short, on August 22, 2023, the two may find new opportunities to work together. The series features a variety of guest appearances and explores themes of family and identity through the experiences of three siblings, played by Jacobson, Ben Feldman, and Max Greenfield.
In her discussion about Long Story Short, Jacobson expressed a personal connection to the show’s narrative, stating, “There’s so much similarity with this show. I’m queer and I’m married to a woman. Then there is such a difference.” Although the family dynamics presented in the show differ from her own upbringing, she found commonality in the shared experiences of growing up as a 90s kid.
The actress also shared her excitement about working with Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of BoJack Horseman, highlighting the unique challenges of voice acting. She noted, “When I’m doing a live-action thing, you can see everything… There’s a limitation here of obviously you’re just focusing on one singular part of my performance.”
With a growing portfolio that includes voiceover work in animated series such as The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy and Bob’s Burgers, Jacobson is also venturing into more dramatic territory. She mentioned an upcoming animated film titled Tangles, which diverges from her comedic background in voiceover work, adding, “There’s a lot of drama in it, while most of the stuff I’ve done in voiceover has been comedy-focused.”
As Long Story Short currently streams on Netflix, Jacobson’s exploration of new genres continues to resonate with audiences, showcasing her versatility as an actress and a storyteller.
