William Earl Lobeck Jr., a transformative figure in the daily car rental industry, passed away on December 16, 2025, at the age of 85. Lobeck’s innovative leadership and entrepreneurial spirit left a significant mark on the automotive sector, shaping major brands and inspiring countless individuals throughout his career.
Born on April 20, 1940, Lobeck began his professional journey in the 1960s at Pontiac and Chevrolet dealerships in Norfolk, Virginia. He quickly recognized the potential within the daily car rental market, becoming a pivotal player by creating the industry’s first dealer repurchase program and establishing a special purpose leasing company. These initiatives not only addressed the needs of rental companies but also set new standards that remain integral to the industry today.
In 1979, Lobeck took on the role of President and Chief Executive Officer at American International, where he guided the company through remarkable growth. Under his leadership, the organization expanded from 18 offices in seven states to nearly 300 locations nationwide. His approach combined clear expectations with a calm demeanor, motivating teams to work collaboratively towards shared goals.
Transforming Thrifty Car Rental and Beyond
In 1981, Lobeck and four partners acquired Thrifty Car Rental, which faced significant financial hurdles. Through meticulous reengineering of the business and a focus on revitalizing its public image, Thrifty experienced a remarkable turnaround, leading to a successful initial public offering in 1987. Shortly thereafter, Chrysler acquired the company, with Lobeck remaining as President and Chief Operating Officer.
While at Chrysler, he played a crucial role in restructuring the organization, which included the acquisition of Dollar Rent A Car, Snappy Car Rental, and General Rent A Car. This merger eventually became known as Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, generating over $1 billion in revenue and solidifying its position as a major player in the rental market.
In 1995, Lobeck turned his attention to another struggling brand, National Car Rental. After acquiring the company, he led a comprehensive turnaround that resulted in a revenue increase of more than one third within a year. His efforts drew the attention of AutoNation, which brought National into its portfolio in 1997, making Lobeck President and Chief Operating Officer of AutoNation’s Rental Group.
After retiring from AutoNation in 1999, Lobeck remained committed to the industry. In 2003, he, alongside Kathy Taylor and Cerberus Capital Management, reacquired the assets of National and Alamo, which had fallen into bankruptcy. Under Lobeck’s leadership, the companies quickly returned to profitability, with Vanguard Car Rental USA becoming one of the industry’s most successful entities before being acquired by Enterprise Rent-A-Car in August 2007.
A Legacy of Generosity and Passion
Beyond his business accomplishments, Lobeck was known for his generosity and commitment to philanthropic causes. He supported various nonprofit organizations and was actively involved in his community. Lobeck’s love of automobiles extended beyond his professional life; he curated an impressive car collection and earned accolades, including a prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance award.
An avid sailor, Lobeck enjoyed traversing the seas with family and friends, exploring destinations such as Greece, Italy, and France. Those who knew him cherished his distinct laugh, his quiet generosity, and his steadfast routines. His mornings typically began with exercise and a healthy breakfast, while evenings often concluded with a Molson Ice, symbolizing a day well spent.
Lobeck held an honorary doctoral degree from Old Dominion University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration. He was also inducted into the University of Tulsa Collins College of Business Hall of Fame and recognized by the Tulsa Historical Society for his contributions to the community.
Married to Kathy Taylor, a former Mayor of Tulsa and Oklahoma Secretary of Commerce, the couple approached both life and business as partners. Their shared interests in travel, sailing, and culinary exploration enriched their lives together. Family vacations were a priority, taking them to various locations, from Montana to the Galapagos Islands.
Lobeck is survived by his daughter Molly Pellegrini, her husband Hank, and their children Annie, Will, Meg, and Charlie; stepdaughter Elizabeth Frame Ellison and her family; daughter Peake Lobeck Mosier; and his beloved dog, Lola. He was preceded in death by his mother, Page Ackiss Lobeck; father, William Earl Lobeck; and sister, Gayle Lobeck Farrow.
His family expresses profound gratitude to those who supported him throughout his decade of care, especially his best friend, Ronnie Watson, and caregivers Karen Mallory and Karen Elzea. In lieu of flowers, they request donations be made in Lobeck’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter, the Philbrook Museum of Art, or Old Dominion University.
Services will be held on January 3, 2026, at 15:00 at Trinity Episcopal Church, honoring a life dedicated to innovation, family, and community.
