Temple Nurses and Techs Secure New Contract, Avert Planned Strike

In a significant development, the Temple University Hospital has successfully reached a new contract agreement with its nurses and medical technicians, averting a five-day strike that was set to begin on October 30, 2023. This agreement, finalized late on Friday, October 27, covers approximately 2,600 employees, including around 1,600 nurses and 1,000 other medical professionals such as social workers and pharmacists.

The approved contract introduces enhanced safety provisions, including the installation of safety detectors and the requirement for certified protection officers to address violent incidents. Additionally, the agreement mandates functional panic buttons, surveillance systems, and emergency alert mechanisms to bolster workplace safety. These measures are aimed at protecting both healthcare workers and patients at Temple’s main hospital.

Details of the Contract and Employee Support

Union leaders emphasized the financial implications of the strike, which would have required the hospital to spend millions on temporary staffing replacements. Marty Harrison, president of the Temple University Hospital Nurses Association, highlighted the crucial role healthcare workers play in patient care. “We are the ones who every day, a thousand times a day, give these patients what they need,” she stated. Harrison went on to express gratitude for the support received from the public and elected officials, which helped secure the terms of the contract.

More than 90% of the members of the Temple Allied Professionals (TAP) union and 87% of TUHNA members voted in favor of the new contract, reflecting strong support among the workforce. The contract guarantees wage increases of 3.25%, 3.25%, and 3% over the next three years, ensuring that employees’ compensation aligns with their contributions to patient care.

Union Leadership and Future Implications

Maureen May, president of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP), expressed the significance of the contract in terms of patient safety. “The significance for many of us was the safety of our patients,” she noted, emphasizing that the agreement was not merely about workplace violence but also about ensuring adequate staffing levels for patient care.

The conclusion of this intense negotiation process represents a mutual commitment between hospital management and union members to uphold high-quality healthcare delivery. The hospital issued a statement on Sunday, underscoring its dedication to recognizing the extraordinary efforts of its employees, which supports its mission to provide safe, high-quality care to the community.

As Temple University Hospital moves forward with this agreement, the focus will remain on improving the working conditions for its healthcare professionals while maintaining the standard of care that patients have come to expect.
