PennDOT Initiates Resurfacing of State Route 93 in Hazleton

PennDOT has commenced the resurfacing of state Route 93, also known as Broad Street, extending from 15th Street in West Hazleton to the border of Carbon and Luzerne counties. The project, which carries a budget of $3,796,370, is expected to wrap up by November 2025, as outlined in PennDOT’s construction schedule.

According to Rich Roman, District 4 Executive of PennDOT, there will be no detours during the resurfacing process, although some lane restrictions will be in effect. “We’re milling the existing pavement surface, putting back new asphalt, and making drainage repairs, pipe replacements, and resurfacing the roadway,” he explained.

The work is being carried out by Pennsy Supply, based in Harrisburg, and is funded through transportation financing. Crews are set to begin the actual resurfacing on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, starting from the Banks Township line to Poplar Street in Hazleton.

Project Details and Expectations

Roman indicated that paving should be completed within the current season, contingent on weather conditions. “The latest update I received is that they started doing milling of the current surface and are working their way from the Carbon County line to the other end of the project,” he noted.

The configuration of the roads will remain unchanged, with no plans for additional lanes or roadway expansions as part of this initiative. This resurfacing effort connects to earlier work completed on state Route 93, which extended from 15th Street in West Hazleton into Sugarloaf Township several years ago.

The project aims to enhance road safety and improve driving conditions for residents and commuters in the area. By investing in the maintenance of state Route 93, PennDOT underscores its commitment to ensuring reliable infrastructure within Pennsylvania.
