MGM Resorts has announced a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts, now fully powering its properties on the Las Vegas Strip with solar energy during peak daytime hours. This achievement comes as part of the company’s commitment to transition all its U.S. properties to renewable electricity by 2030. The boost in solar energy capacity is attributed to a new power-purchase agreement with the Escape Solar and Storage Project, located in Lincoln County, approximately 85 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
According to MGM’s CEO and President, Bill Hornbuckle, this initiative not only reflects the company’s dedication to clean energy but also showcases the potential for sustainable operations within the casino industry. “The new Escape Solar and Storage Project reflects our focus on scalable, impactful clean-energy solutions,” Hornbuckle stated. He emphasized that such advancements contribute to long-term cost stability and a more resilient energy future, ultimately strengthening the business.
The agreement with the Escape Solar and Storage Project grants MGM access to 115 megawatts of solar energy and 400 megawatt-hours of battery storage. This nearly doubles the company’s solar energy generation capacity when combined with the existing 100-megawatt Mega Solar Array, situated about 30 miles north of Las Vegas. While the solar farms provide substantial energy, MGM acknowledges that there may be certain hours—varying with seasonal changes and temperature fluctuations—when additional energy sources will be necessary.
The new solar farm commenced supplying power to MGM in December 2023, following the signing of a 25-year agreement in September 2024. In addition to the Mega Solar Array and the Escape Solar Array, MGM boasts 26,000 solar panels installed atop the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, along with a 100-kilowatt solar array that assists in powering the T-Mobile Arena.
This transition to solar energy marks a critical step for MGM Resorts, positioning the company as a leader in sustainability within the hospitality and entertainment sectors. As the demand for renewable energy solutions grows, MGM’s proactive approach serves as a model for other businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprints while maintaining operational efficiency.
